Tacoma Defiance News Release
After learning of Governor Inslee's announcement earlier today, the decision has been made to play Wednesday evening's USL Championship match behind closed doors at Cheney Stadium. With San Diego Loyal's squad already in town to play the contest, Tacoma Defiance has been in touch with the United Soccer League, regional government agencies and health authorities about the best path forward. Because Cheney Stadium will be closed to the public, it has been deemed safe to proceed with Tacoma Defiance's second match of the season.
Tacoma Defiance (0-1-0, 0 points) continues its third campaign in Tacoma on Wednesday against expansion club San Diego Loyal SC (0-0-1, 1 point). Kickoff for the match is at 7:00 p.m. PT, with the game being live-streamed on ESPN+, featuring Andrew Harvey and Dave Clark on the call.
Recently in the South Sound, a public Tacoma City Council session was held that featured information on the next phase of the public process surrounding the soccer-specific stadium that is being developed in Central Tacoma. It marked the next step of the stadium project, following last summer's feasibility study that was conducted for a three-part concept to serve the Tacoma and greater Pierce County communities. This project is inclusive of a state-of-the-art soccer-specific stadium, the potential for mixed-use development and a new multi-field sports complex in Tacoma.
