Seattle Sounders FC News Release
Sounders FC (2-0-1, 7 points) hits the road this weekend to face Cascadia rival Portland Timbers (1-2-0, 3 points) at Providence Park (12:00 p.m. PT / ABC, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM). Seattle is unbeaten to start the 2021 campaign, with a pair of home wins over Minnesota United and the LA Galaxy, as well as a road draw at Los Angeles FC. Sunday marks the first match of the season between Seattle and Portland, as well as the first matchup between the two sides with fans in attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Portland has three points from three game so far in 2021, including a home win over Houston and road defeats to Vancouver and FC Dallas. The Timbers most recently fell 3-1 to Liga MX side Club América on Wednesday at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, knocking them out of the Concacaf Champions League.
Historically, Seattle and Portland have met 111 times in all competitions dating back to 1975, the most between two U.S.-based clubs, and the second-most in U.S./Canadian soccer history. Since their first meeting in the old North American Soccer League, Seattle leads the all-time series 54-42-15. Sounders FC holds a slight edge in MLS regular season play at 12-10-4, while the Timbers are 3-1-0 in the postseason, eliminating Seattle twice.
Network ABC is airing the match nationally, with regional radio coverage on 950 KJR AM (English) and El Rey 1360 AM (Spanish), as well as 10 international feeds across Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.
Brian Schmetzer's side next hits the road this Wednesday, May 13 to face the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium (7:30 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
