Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Corpus Christi (17-27, 42-72) @ Arkansas (20-24, 56-55)
The Hooks open a six-game road trip with the first in a three-game series at Dickey-Stephens Park tonight against the Travelers. Monday, the Hooks fell to Midland 1-0 as the RockHounds swept the four-game series at Whataburger Field. Matt Sulentic's ground-rule double with two outs in the seventh plated the game's only run.
The Travelers collected a 2-1 win in 10 innings Monday to gain a split in their four-game series at Northwest Arkansas. The Travs, first-half winners in the North, have split their last 10 games.
The Hooks are 2-4 against Arkansas this year; 1-2 in both locales.
Tonight's Matchup:
RHP Paul Clemens (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Loek Van Mil (3-5, 2.35)
Clemens, acquired by the Astros along with two other pitchers and outfielder Jordan Schafer in the deal that sent outfielder Michael Bourn to Atlanta, makes his second start for the Hooks. Last Thursday in San Antonio, Clemens was sharp in his Hooks debut, holding the Missions to one unearned run on two singles over six innings. He walked five, struck out seven and threw exactly 100 pitches. He took a no-decision, as the Missions rallied for five against the pen in the eighth for a 6-1 final. Prior to the trade, Clemens pitched for the Mississippi Braves of the AA Southern League, where in 20 starts he was 6-5 with a 3.73 ERA and a South Division All-Star. Originally a seventh-round selection of the Braves in the 2008 draft out of Louisburg (NC) Junior College, Clemens split his time last season between Rome in the South Atlantic League and Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League, going a combined 2-4 with 3 saves and a 3.23 ERA in 35 games and eight starts.
÷ In 114.2 innings this season has allowed 105 hits and 49 walks with 100 strikeouts
÷ Has 9 quality starts this year and 15 starts with 2 or fewer earned runs allowed
÷ Has given up just 1 HR in his last 9 starts (spanning 45.0 IP)
Van Mil, the "player to be named later" in the deal last August that sent LHP Brian Fuentes to the Minnesota Twins, makes his 24th appearance and first start for the Travelers. Van Mil gets the spot start in place of Garrett Richards, who starts tonight for the Angels at Yankee Stadium. Van Mil's most recent outing came Sunday at Northwest Arkansas when he allowed three unearned runs on four hits in one inning on the hill to suffer the 8-5 loss. While he has given up nine runs in his last four appearances and been tagged with three losses, only two of those nine runs have been earned, giving him a 1.74 ERA in that stretch. In fact, in 11 second-half appearances, Van Mil is 2-3 with a 0.72 ERA.
÷ Has held Texas League opponents to a .238 batting average
÷ Made one appearance against the Hooks May 28 at DSP (1.2-3-1-1-3-0, ND)
÷ His longest outing this year was 4.0 innings in a June 27 win vs. NW Ark. (4.0-2-0-0-3-2)
÷ At 7'1" is the tallest player in professional baseball
Shut out
The Hooks suffered their eighth shutout loss Monday. Three of those eight losses have occurred in the last seven games. During the club's current eight-game losing streak, the Hooks have scored 18 runs, with eight of those runs coming in Sunday's 11-8 loss to Midland.
The strain on the offense comes in the wake of big-league (Jose Altuve, J.D. Martinez, Jimmy Paredes) and AAA call-ups (Jacob Goebbert) and recent injuries to Jimmy VanOstrand and Chris Wallace. In the first 37 games of the second half, the Hooks had not been shut out, and in those 37 games were batting .276 (347x1259) and averaging 5.41 runs per game. The club had scored 3 or more runs in 34 of those 37 games.
Since August 2, with Altuve, Martinez, Paredes and Goebbert all gone, the Hooks are 0-7 with a .218 (49x225) batting average and are scoring at a clip of 2.14 runs per game.
Wallace to the DL
The Astros announced today that catcher Chris Wallace (right wrist) has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to August 8. Wallace last saw action August 3 at San Antonio. He was removed midway through that game with pain in his right wrist.
The move leaves the Hooks with 23 on the active roster.
Villar still setting table
Shortstop and leadoff man Jonathan Villar continues to produce at the top of the order. With his 2-for-4 effort Monday, Villar has hits in four of the last five games (8x22, 3 doubles) and has hit safely in 18 of the last 22 (27x86, .314). Fourteen of his last 27 hits have gone for extra bases (8 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HRs), and Villar has scored 19 runs in the last 22 games.
Major League debuts
We mentioned earlier that Garrett Richards, who would have started tonight against the Hooks, instead gets the start for the Angels in New York against Ivan Nova and the Yankees. Richards, 12-2 with a 3.06 ERA for the Travelers, becomes the first pitcher to make his major league debut in the new Yankee Stadium.
Also tonight, former Hook Henry Sosa has been called up by the Astros to get the start tonight in Phoenix against the Diamondbacks. Sosa, obtained by the Astros along with RHP Jason Stoffel in the Jeff Keppinger deal with San Francisco, made just three starts with the Hooks (2-0, 2.89) and only one start for AAA Oklahoma City last Friday at Las Vegas (7.0-5-0-0-3-3, ND).
In what has been an unprecedented season for major league call-ups, Sosa becomes the seventh former Hook to make his Houston debut this year (Jordan Lyles, David Carpenter, Jose Altuve, J.D. Martinez, Jimmy Paredes, J.B. Shuck).
Pitching Rotation at Arkansas
Thursday: LHP Brett Oberholtzer (0-0, 3.00) vs. RHP Eddie McKiernan (6-10, 5.33)
