Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock - Mike Trout hit an RBI double to score Chris Pettit from first base in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Travs a 1-0 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Dickey-Stephens Park. An announced crowd of 3,456 watched the Travs take the first game of a three-game set. The Hooks have lost nine in a row and haven't scored a run in 22 innings.
Before the first baseman Pettit reached on a single off of Hooks' reliever Jason Stoffel to right field in the 11th, the Hooks had retired 10 consecutive Travs.
Stoffel (0-2, 6.14) earned the loss giving up two hits without recording an out, and Travs' reliever Steven Geltz (2-3, 3.44) got the win, pitching a perfect top of the 11th inning while striking out one.
Hooks' right fielder Jon Gaston doubled over Trout's head in center field to start the top of the 10th inning. After T.J. Steele failed to sacrifice bunt him to third base, popping up to the pitcher, Emerson Frostad singled to left field. Hooks' manager Tom Lawless sent Gaston around third base, but left fielder Roberto Lopez easily threw him out at home.
Travs' 7'1" righty Loek Van Mil started his first game of the year and got the no-decision. He pitched five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out two without a walk. Van Mil had made 23 appearances out of the bullpen before his start.
Hooks' starter Paul Clemens pitched six and two-thirds scoreless innings giving up four hits and three walks, while striking out six in the no-decision.
Frostad doubled to left field to start the top of the third inning and was sacrificed to third base by catcher Brian Esposito for the first out. Last-place batter Brandon Wikoff hit a grounder to third baseman Luis Jimenez and got Frostad in a run down. Frostad was eventually tagged out by the shortstop Darwin Perez in a play that was scored 5-2-6-2-1-6. Wikoff went to second during the rundown, but Jonathan Villar flew out to right field to end the inning.
Wladimir Sutil reached second base on a Van Mil throwing error to begin the top of the fourth inning and moved to third when Kody Hinze hit a one-out single to left field. Right fielder Jon Gaston hit a sharp grounder to Chris Pettit at first base where Pettit tagged Hinze out trying to advance to second and stepped on first base for a double play and the final out of the inning.
Before the game-winning RBI by Trout, the Travs' best chance to score came when Lopez hit a two-out double to left field in the bottom of the fourth and was thrown out at home plate on Matt Cusick's single to left field to end the inning.
Travs reliever Mike Piazza relieved for Van Mil in the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out one. Reliever Daniel Sattler pitched three scoreless innings for the Travs, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out three.
Trout went 2 for 5 with an RBI to lead the Travs, and Frostad and Hinze each went 2 for 4 for the Hooks.
The Travs left eight men on base and hit 1 for 4 with runners in scoring position and the Hooks left five men on batting 2 for 10 with RISP, with both runners getting thrown out at home. Time of game was 3:13.
The Travs continue the series with the Hooks on Thursday, Aug. 11, at Dickey-Stephens Park. Texas League Pitcher of the Week, righty Eddie McKiernan (6-10, 5.33) will start for the Travs and lefty Brett Oberholtzer (0-0, 3.00) starts for the Hooks.
McKiernan gave up two hits in nine innings for the win in his last start against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Aug. 6. He gave up one run and struck out seven without a walk. In his last two outings, McKiernan is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA. He has given up six hits in 16 and one-third innings, striking out 15 and walking two.
In his only start with the Hooks, Oberholtzer got a no-decision against the Midland Rockhounds on Aug. 5. He gave up two runs on five hits in six innings, striking out four with two walks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 and gates open at 6:10.
