OHL Kingston Frontenacs

Game Day Preview: KGN vs OTT

November 9, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

The Kingston Frontenacs head to Ottawa tonight for a fifth matchup versus the 67's at TD Place. The Frontenacs sit two points behind the barber poles (tied with idle Hamilton Bulldogs) in the East Division standings coming off a big 6-5 overtime win on Sunday afternoon on against the Peterborough Petes.

Kingston has collected five of eight points going 2-1-1-0 in the season series against Ottawa and lead in total goals 16 -10. The Fronts season and home-opener began with an 8-1 thrashing in the Limestone City over Ottawa on the strength of a 2G,2A performance for Lucas Edmonds in his first OHL game. The eight-marker, seven-goal winning margin remains a season high for the Black and Gold.

The Scoop

Three consecutive one-goal games followed the 8-1 Fronts win. The 67's won a pair of 3-2 matches with the second game having Jack Beck put the 67's up 3-2 early in the third period for the eventual game-winner after the teams opened with a four-goal first and a 2-2 score through the second. Kingston's suffered another defeat by the same score when Ottawa's Vsevolod Gaidamak scored his second of the game, erasing an early 2-0 Kingston, for a 3-2 comeback OT win on October 29.

Martin Chromiak scored a hattrick and Kingston scored three-straight to fight back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits. Chromiak now leads the team with 18 points. Matthew Soto had a pair of assists including teaming up with Chromiak for the 4-3 game-winning goal early in the third period. Rookie Aidan Spooner collected his first OHL win with 27 saves during his first career start in net after getting the nod from head coach Luca Caputi.

Love Playing Ottawa

With the hat trick, Chromiak leads the season series versus Ottawa with four goals and eight points in the four games played. Captain Shane Wright and Edmonds have each recorded six points (3G,3A), while Jordan Frasca and rookie Paul Ludwinski have chipped in with four assists respectively.

Streaking

Matthew Soto registered two assists in the 6-5 Kingston win on Sunday and now has points in eight consecutive games (4G,9A). "I don't really think about that stuff," said the rookie," its great, but I just think about winning and playing hard as a team." Teammate Braden Haché is as excited as fans at the rookies' start. "I couldn't be happier for him. He's a great kid off the ice, he's dedicated and wants to work. He's a smart player and probably one of the more skilled players on the ice every night. I'm happy he's here with us."

Shane Wright has collected four goals and six assists during a five-game streak including a four-assist performance in the 6-5 OT win last game over Peterborough. The captain has also registered at least six shots on goal during the run.

Martin Chromiak has 12 points on four goals and eight assists during a five-game streak. Like Wright, the LA Kings prospect collected four assists during the overtime last Sunday.

Quotes

Haché was proud of the teams compete after big 6-5-win last Sunday. The Florida Panthers draft pick (2021-7th round) recalls the team beginning to build its identity in 2019-20:" It's a big team win for us coming back. Its something we struggled with a couple years ago and its part of our new culture in believing in ourselves. I think we have a team that believes in one and other."

As an 18-year-old player, the defender has been assuming a much larger role on the team since his rookie 2019-20 campaign." Taking a leadership role and my experience in Florida and bringing it back here is key for me." A big step for a former 4th-round pick at the 2019 OHL Selection, but has shown on and off the ice he can handle the pressure.

Skating and gap control was the focus for the now two-inch taller, 6-foot-four, 205-pound physical defender during the offseason heading into Florida's training camp. "The game is the same at the next level just guys are faster and stronger," said the much-improved skater. "Spending a month with top class players and an NHL organization that has a lot of talented players helped my confidence by seeing what I need to work on to get to the next level so I'm definably more comfortable on my feet."

Notes

Forward Jordan Frasca missed his second game with injury on Sunday. Status remains day-to-day.

Matthew Soto has had an impressive start to his OHL career. The rookie forwards' 13 points have him just three-points behind Oshawa's Calum Ritchie in a tie for second place for the freshman league-lead. Soto's nine assists are also good enough for second behind Ty Nelson of North Bay (11).

Shane Wright was named OHL Player of the Week with three goals and five assists over three games last week. He's the first Frontenacs player to earn the honour since forward Brett Neumann back in Dec 2018.
