Tangle at the top
The games always mean more at this time of year, and tonight features a clash of two of the top three teams in the Western Conference. With one more game played, Portland sits seven points behind Everett for the top seed in the conference ahead of what should be a fantastic evening of hockey. It's also the first time these two clubs have met since Jan. 1, when Dante Giannuzzi stopped a career-high 51 shots in a 7-6 shootout win for Portland.
Despite looking up at the Tips in the standings, Portland's four remaining games (including tonight) against Everett mean the window is open for the Hawks to gain some ground in head-to-head competition. We're in for an exciting finish to the regular season, and tonight's tilt is sure to bring the fireworks.
Goats the Penguin
On Tuesday, Winterhawks goaltender Taylor Gauthier signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins which kicks in ahead of the 2022-23 season. It was something of a relief for the undrafted 20-year-old, but there remains a bit of unfinished business as he wraps up his junior career.
With just over a month remaining in the regular season, the club is locking into a playoff mentality, and Gauthier wants to finish with a flourish in the WHL playoffs.
"That (a championship) has been my goal in coming here. Seeing where we are in the standings, I really think we can take on any team. I'm super confident in the team and the coaches, and I think the coaches are confident in us. We've got all the tools to do it, it's just a matter of getting out there and performing up to the level we can. And obviously, it'd be nice to cap off my junior career with a WHL championship or a Memorial Cup," said Gauthier.
