On The Board

As we hit the midway point of the road trip, the Hawks have begun to pick up steam with their first win of 2023 over Prince Albert on Tuesday night. Gabe Klassen was the story in his hometown, notching a goal and two assists in front of friends and family en route to a 5-3 win.

Tonight, it's Josh Zakreski and Braeden Jockims - who made his WHL debut against the Raiders last night - on home ice as the Saskatoon natives visit SaskTel Centre once more! Will we have another hometown hero in Blade City?

Trade Deadline Tango

After a quiet start to the season trade-wise, the Winterhawks were quite active on deadline day with four deals on the books. Three deals brought in draft picks and a prospect in exchange for Dawson Pasternak, Nick Andrusiak and Donavan Bodnar, and the fourth could have massive implications for the Western Conference title race as we await word on the San Jose Sharks' decision to either return former Prince Albert standout Ozzy Wiesblatt to the WHL - where Portland yesterday acquired his rights - or keep him in the AHL.

On the other side of the ice, the Hawks will face off with a semi-familiar face as former Brandon Wheat Kings forward Jake Chiasson makes his Blades debut this evening. Chiasson, acquired by Saskatoon for three draft picks, picked up an assist in Brandon's 3-2 win over Portland at the start of this trip.

Scouting Saskatoon

Much like the Winterhawks, the Blades could fly under the radar without any highly-drafted NHL prospects on their roster but have found their way into the CHL Top 10 rankings week after week thanks to some impressive depth and two stout goaltenders. Trevor Wong has been Saskatoon's main offensive driver with 46 points in 35 games, with a large supporting cast of players like Brandon Lisowsky, Aidan De La Gorgendiere, Egor Sidorov and former Seattle Thunderbird Conner Roulette contributing consistently as well.

Keep an eye on goaltender Austin Elliott, who leads the league in both GAA (1.89) and save percentage (.925%) after a stellar start to his 18-year-old season. The native of Strathmore, Alta. has won 14 of his 18 starts this year and has allowed more than two goals just five times this season.
