Gambler Second Stuns Hawks
November 9, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Offensively the second period has been the best for the Waterloo Black Hawks this season, but Saturday in Green Bay it was the stanza which undid the Hawks chances, as the Gamblers scored four times and topped the visitors 4-3 at Brown County Arena.
Green Bay seized control of the previously 1-0 game during the second. Ryan Lough was the catalyst with a pair of goals and an assist, first tying the contest at the two minute mark. Waterloo pulled ahead again briefly at 6:34 as Tim Lappin flipped a rebound into the net from just outside the crease, but it was all Gamblers from there. Brent Gates scored on a breakaway at 9:25, then Green Bay went to the lead for the first time on Fredrik Olofsson's chance from the high slot during a power play at 12:31. Lough extended the lead on a steal and slippery shot from the left dot at 18:34.
The Hawks had nudged in front during the eighth minute of play, with successful puck movement near the Gambler net. Drew Melanson fed a pass from the end wall to Tyler Sheehy at the top of the crease, and Sheehy's quick shot beat goaltender Jared Rutledge for the only goal of the opening frame.
Waterloo challenged for a point in the final minute of regulation; Peter Krieger drove a rebound into the net with 44.9 showing on the clock and an extra attacker on the ice. However, the Hawks could not force overtime in the final shift.
The Hawks outshot Green Bay in every period and by a total of 53-30. Rutledge made a dazzling 50 saves, while Mathias Israelsson turned in 26.
After a 4-0-0 start on the road this season, the Hawks have now been on the short side of three straight outside the Cedar Valley. Following Saturday's five-hour trip to Green Bay, Waterloo travels five hours in a different direction for their next game. Friday, the Black Hawks meet the Sioux Falls Stampede for the third time this season, before returning home Saturday to host the Omaha Lancers.
