Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

MUSKEGON, MI- A night after their powerplay led them to victory, the Dubuque Fighting Saints were shutdown on the man-advantage Saturday, as Muskegon upended them 3-1 at the L.C. Walker Arena. In Friday night's 3-2 overtime win, the Fighting Saints powerplay was a perfect 3-for-3, but Saturday was a different story as the Saints went 0-for-5, and failed to score on a 5-on-3 advantage and a major powerplay. Muskegon's best penalty killer was goaltender Jordan Uhelskis who stopped 36 shots in the win.

The first period saw the Lumberjacks convert on a pair of opportunities. Muskegon jumped out front only 7:58 into the game. Carson Gatt received a pass at the left point and sent it to former Fighting Saint Matt McArdle at the right point. McArdle fired a wrist shot towards Dubuque netminder Christian Frey through a group of players in front. The shot was deflected by Scott Pooley at the last second and worked its way past Frey to make it 1-0 Muskegon.

The Lumberjacks would add to their lead just under ten minutes later on the powerplay. A quick passing play off the near-side boards set up Matt Iacopelli for a shot from the right side faceoff circle. Frey made the save with his arm, but the puck snuck past him and hit the post. It sat loose in the crease, and Trevor Morbeck shoved the puck under Frey to make it 2-0 Muskegon at 16:35.

In the second period, the Fighting Saints had numerous chances, including a lengthy 5-on-3 powerplay. While goaltender Uhelski was sharp, Muskegon's defense had a large part as well. Muskegon defender Carson Gatt saved a goal late in the period, sliding across the crease and denying a point blank chance.

Early in the third period, the Fighting Saints scored their lone goal of the game to cut Muskegon's lead in half. Jason Ford accepted a Robby Darrar pass and darted in on Uhelski. He wristed a shot that Uhelski bobbled, and Ford tapped in a rebound out of mid-air to make it 2-1 Muskegon only 1:50 into the third period.

Shortly following, Dubuque was awarded a major powerplay when Morbeck of Muskegon was assessed a five-minute major for elbowing when he hit Dubuque's Dylan Chanter. The Fighting Saints had several chances on the powerplay, but again were unable to convert as Uhelski was solid in goal.

Dubuque pulled Frey for an extra attacker late, but Steven Spinner scored into the empty net at 18:57 to secure the win for Muskegon.

Frey suffered his first loss in goal and stopped 28 shots in the losing effort. He is now 7-1-0 on the season. At the other end, Uhelski kicked was the game's first star and improved to 4-3-2.

The Fighting Saints next home game is Military Appreciation Night, presented by Kwik Stop and Dairy Queen on Friday, November 15 versus Tri-City at 7:35 p.m. The Fighting Saints will be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game with all proceeds going to the Veterans Freedom Center. Military members and veterans also receive a special offer of $3 off tickets purchased to next Friday's game. Tickets are available by calling 563.583.6880 or by visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
