Gailen, Johnson Lead Barnstormers To Rout

Blake Gailen belted a pair of home runs, and Alan Johnson fired seven strong innings, leading the way to an 11-3 Lancaster Barnstormers victory over the Camden Rivershaks Tuesday evening at Campbell's Field.

The win moved manager Butch Hobson within one victory of 1,500 in his managerial career and kept the streaking Barnstormers one game in front of Somerset in the Freedom Division.

Lancaster grabbed a 2-0 lead over Bryan Corey (1-3) on an RBI single by Jesus Merchan in the first inning and another by Gailen in the fourth, but it was a defensive play that retained control of the lead for the Barnstormers.

Colin Roberson led off the fourth with a double down the right field line, and Brian Burgamy was hit by a pitch. The first Camden run of the night scored on a single to left by Eduardo Perez that left Camden with runners at first and second and nobody out. Paddy Matera laid a bunt down on the third base side, which Johnson pounced on and fired to third for the force play. Kody Kirkland still had time to double up Matera at first.

The Barnstormers took advantage of the opportunity and struck for four runs in the fifth. Godwin bunted for a base hit. With Godwin in motion, Lentini doubled inside the third base bag to score the run. Two outs later, Merchan roped a double to left. Gailen followed with an opposite field homer and a 6-1 lead.

Brad Boyer homered to left to kick off a four-run seventh as the Barnstormers pulled away. Gailen added his second long ball of the game in the ninth.

Johnson (2-2) departed after seven innings. The right-hander allowed six hits and one run, did not issue a walk and struck out four in winning his second straight in Camden.

Lancaster will square off against Camden again on Wednesday evening. Mark Brackman (0-0) will get the start for the Barnstormers, and lefty Keith Weiser (0-1) will take the hill for Camden. Game time is 7:00. The game will be aired on WLAN-AM, 1390 and on 1390wlan.com starting at 6:45.

NOTES: Gailen had the first two-homer game for the Barnstormers on the season...The Barnstormers have outscored their opponents, 52-19 in the last seven games...They have won four straight and eight of 10...Over the four-game winning streak, the starting rotation has a composite ERA of 1.16 and has walked only three batters in 31 innings...Lentini extended his hitting streak to eight games...Merchan is 12-for-18 on the season against Camden...He leads the league with a .490 average overall...Lentini and Godwin are also still batting over .400...The Barnstormers set a season high with 28 total bases.
