Portland, Ore. - The Western Hockey League today announced that Winterhawks captain Gabe Klassen has been named the U.S. Division Most Sportsmanlike Player. He is one of four finalists for the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy which is awarded annually to the WHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player.

Klassen set new career highs this year with 35 goals and 69 points to lead the Hawks in scoring during the regular season. The captain was named co-Most Valuable Player at the Winterhawks end-of-season team awards. The native of Prince Albert, Sask. led the team with five game-winning goals and 18 special teams goals this season while playing on the Hawks' top power play and penalty kill unit. He remained disciplined all season, sitting for only 30 penalty minutes, and represented the Winterhawks with class both on and off the ice.

The fourth-year Winterhawk has one goal and one assist in three playoff games this season and is one win away from helping his team advance to the Western Conference Semi-Final. Originally selected 19th overall in the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft, Klassen boasts 159 points in 181 career games with the Hawks.

The Most Sportsmanlike Players of the Year from the four divisions are voted upon annually by WHL general managers and head coaches. The winner of the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy for WHL Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year will be announced on Thursday, May 4. Three Winterhawks have previously won the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy, including Seth Jarvis most recently claiming the award after the 2019-20 season.
