Gabe Clark Homers in HarbourCats Loss

Hearty fans of the Victoria HarbourCats, 882 strong, braved a humid, misty, chilly night at Sports Traders Diamond on Monday night, treated to a few dandy plays and a long two-run home run from one of the late arrivals, Gabe Clark.
Aside from a great throw from Nathan Lukes to nail a runner at home late in the game, giving the HarbourCats a great shot at a comeback, the most impressive part of Monday night was how many people stayed right to the bitter end to cheer on their home team. The great news? The weather forecast is much better for the rest of the series -- Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
The HarbourCats fell 4-3 to the visiting Bend Elks in a game where both teams stroked nine hits. Bend committed the game's lone error in a game that was played in mucky, slippery conditions.
J.T. Kaul was the winning pitcher for Bend, going six innings and striking out three batters. He didn't issue a walk, and scattered six hits -- with one of them being Clark's long shot to left field, driving in catcher Aaron Barnett, who was playing his first game for Victoria on Monday. Barnett was 2-4, as were teammates Nathan Lukes and Alex DeGoti.
The HarbourCats surrendered a run in the top of the fourth, and two more in the top of the sixth before responding with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The teams exchanged runs in the eighth.
Kevin Sheets notched a two-inning save for Bend, with four strikeouts and a run allowed.
Andrew Nelson of Victoria took the loss, allowing six hits in six innings to go with three earned runs, three walks, and a pair of strikeouts. Quinten Torres-Costa worked two innings and gave up a run when Bend's baserunning pushed the eventual winning run across the plate.
The HarbourCats, now 5-8, have lost five in a row and will look to stop that slide on Tuesday in the second game against Bend. Right-hander Logan Lombana will be the starting pitcher, while the Bend probable starter is unknown. Gametime is 7:11pm at Sports Traders Diamond at Royal Athletic Park.
