Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wa. - The evening once again belonged to pitching, and this time, the Walla Walla Sweets came out on top.
Battling it out for four-and-a-half scoreless innings against the non-league opponent Thurston County Senators, the Sweets finally took charge in the bottom of the fifth inning. John Skrbec singled with one out, and Mark Contreras was hit by a pitch. Moe Handcox turned on a Nick Mailhot fastball and shot it just inside the bag at third base for an RBI double, with Contreras moving to third. Mailhot was removed from the game, and sidearmer Jake Patterson entered and uncorked a wild pitch to score Contreras, giving the Sweets a 2-0 lead.
Mailhot would eventually be saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over his five-and-one-third innings of work.
Meanwhile, Walla Walla native Jake Campeau, getting the start for the Sweets, was nearly unhittable. He retired the first eleven batters he faced, and did not allow a run until the seventh inning, when the Senators collected two singles and a double to make the score 2-1.
Campeau finished with only one run allowed on four hits over seven innings, striking out four batters while only walking one.
Omar Porras relieved Campeau to begin the eighth inning and allowed two baserunners, one via a single and the other on catcher's interference, but stranded both to keep the Senators in check.
Entering the bottom of the eighth, the Sweets needed insurance runs. Sean Bouchard flied out to right field and J.J. Robinson struck out looking for two quick outs, but Ryan Littlefield drilled a solo home run to left field against Thurston County right-hander Ben Schweinfurth to give the Sweets a two-run lead.
"I felt like I was a little passive (in) my first three at-bats, and I was kind of missing a few pitches late in the count," said Littlefield. But referencing his final at-bat, he explained "I saw a fat one, so I figured I'd get a pitch early and try to drive it."
Porras remained on the mound for the ninth, and immediately the Sweets were thankful for Littlefield's homer. Zach Abbruzza led off with a double, and Marcus Hinkle hit a double of his own to bring Thurston County within one run. But Porras induced a popout, groundout and a flyout to strand the tying run on third base and give the Sweets the win, 3-2.
The Sweets face the Senators again at 7:05 PM Tuesday at Borleske Stadium.
