Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field. The G-Braves scored their highest amount of runs in a game this season, as every G-Brave in the lineup except for center fielder Gregor Blanco and designated hitter Matt Young had at least 1 RBI. Braves third baseman Wes Timmons tied the team-high for hits in a game this season with 4. Gwinnett is over .500 for the first time since 4/10. Gwinnett (13-12) sits in second place in the International League South and 2 games behind Durham. Pawtucket (9-15) remains in last place in the IL North.
It Was Over When: The G-Braves first took at-bats. Left fielder Mitch Jones and first baseman Barbaro Canizares recorded an RBI each in the 1st inning, making the score 2-0 in favor of the home team. The Red Sox never had the lead. At least one run was scored in every inning but the 4th and the 8th.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starter Tim Gustafson (2-1) earned the win today, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing only 2 R/ER on 6 hits.
At the plate: The G-Braves had their highest amount of hits in a game this season in today's game (15). Every G-Brave reached base today and Young was the only player in the lineup to not get a hit. Third baseman Wes Timmons went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Left fielder Mitch Jones went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Starter Fabio Castro (0-2) allowed 5 R/ER on 7 hits in 3.1 IP. Reliever Ramon Ramirez left the game with an apparent hand injury after being hit by a sharp line drive off the bat of Brent Clevlen. He allowed 4 R/ER on 4 hits in 2.0 IP.
At the plate: Right fielder Daniel Nava finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, while shortstop Angel Sanchez went 2-for-5 with a run scored. In his first appearance for the Red Sox, second baseman Niuman Romero went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Pawtucket in game three of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. That game will be televised on CSS and you can hear it on the radio at WDUN-550 AM. G-Braves RHP James Parr (1-2, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Michael Bowden (0-0, 7.20 ERA) of the Red Sox.
