Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to seal a wild come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday night at Coolray Field. Gwinnett (12-12), who remains in second place in the International League South, sliced Durham's lead in the division to 3 games with the win. Pawtucket (9-14) drops to last place in the IL North.

It Was Over When: With the G-Braves down 6-4 in the bottom of the 9th inning, the squad rattled off four consecutive singles, leading to Matt Young and Wes Timmons crossing the plate to tie the game. With J.C. Holt at third base-he was pinch running for Freddie Freeman after his RBI single - and Barbaro Canizares at first after one of his own, left fielder Mitch Jones stepped up to the plate. Jones hit a towering shot into the brick wall beyond the outfield wall for what looked to be a walk-off homer. But, after the umpiring crew originally called the home run a fair ball, they reconvened only to settle on a foul call instead. Paw Sox pitcher Fernando Cabrera then walked Jones to load the bases and, subsequently, Brent Clevlen for the winning run.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Ryne Reynoso gave up 4 R/ER on 5 hits in the 1st inning. He settled down from there, though, not allowing another run in his 4.2 IP. Cristhian Martinez (1-1) earned his first win as a G-Brave, going 2.0 IP in relief with 2 K's.

At the plate: Mitch Jones hit his fourth home run of the year and his third in as many games, becoming the first Gwinnett Brave to ever homer in three straight contests. Canizares and Clevlen both finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Kris Johnson went 5.0 IP and allowed 3 R/ER while striking out 2 and walking 2, but Cabrera (0-3) blew the save and took the loss for Pawtucket by giving up 3 R/ER in 0.1 IP.

At the plate: Jorge Jimenez went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Tug Hulett was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Pawtucket in the second game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves RHP Tim Gustafson (1-1, 6.75 ERA) is scheduled to face LHP Fabio Castro (0-1, 8.10 ERA) of the Red Sox.
