Chiefs Fall to Columbus 6-3

Columbus, Ohio - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals lost to the Columbus Clippers on Sunday afternoon by the score of 6-3. Yohan Pino picked up the win for the Clippers throwing six innings and striking out three. Collin Balester took the loss for Syracuse as he threw two innings and gave up five runs.

Columbus (16-9) got on the board first with two runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Balester allowed Jason Donald to reach on a one out walk, and then Carlos Santana singled behind him. Shelley Duncan plated Donald with an RBI single and Brian Busher scored Santana with a two out RBI base hit.

Syracuse (14-10) scored it's first run in the top of the second as Seth Bynum knocked in Mike Morse with a two out RBI single. Chris Duncan was also on base but was thrown out at home plate trying to score from first base on the play which also ended the inning.

The Clippers scored three more runs in the second inning against Balester on a two RBI triple from Jason Donald and an RBI double from Jason Donald. Those base hits came back to back.

Josh Whitesell knocked in Pete Orr in the Syracuse sixth with a sacrifice fly for the second Syracuse run. The sixth run for Columbus came across in the bottom of that same inning when Jose Constanza hit an RBI single to score Chris Jiminez.

Atahualpa Severino, Jason Bergmann and Doug Slaten pitched out of the bullpen for the Chiefs. Severino threw three scoreless innings and Bergmann threw two, giving up one run. Slaten pitched one inning and extended his scoreless streak to 14 consecutive innings.

On Monday, the Chiefs play game three of the series against Columbus. The scheduled pitchers are Shairon Martis (0-2, 6.75) for Syracuse and Josh Tomlin (2-1, 3.68) for Columbus. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
