Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Syracuse Chiefs swept tonight's doubleheader against the Gwinnett Braves on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett (31-37) lost Game 1 (a postponed game from Syracuse on 5/9) by a score of 5-0, and then fell to Syracuse (40-29) in Game 2 in a 1-0 shutout. Both games were 7 innings. The G-Braves now stand in second place, 9.5 games behind International League South leader Durham. The Chiefs are now a half-game ahead of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for first in the IL North.
Game 1
It Was Over When: Syracuse starter Craig Stammen (1-0) took the bump. Stammen, who went 4-7 and pitched more than 11 innings with Washington (MLB) last season, came within one out of throwing the first Syracuse no-hitter in 10 years to secure the win.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: RHP Todd Redmond (7-6) had his string of four straight winning starts snapped, getting charged with the loss after allowing 5 R/3 ER in 5.1 innings of work.
At the plate: With 3B Wes Timmons and his season-high 12 game hitting streak on the bench, the G-Braves couldn't muster a hit until new acquisition OF Josh Anderson slapped a single through the infield with two outs to break up the no-hitter in the 7th inning.
The opposition:
On the Mound: Stammen went the entire 7.0 IP, yielding 2 hits (both with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th) and walking 1 while striking out 4 in his complete game shutout.
At the plate: OF Justin Maxwell clubbed his third HR of the year, finishing 1-for-2. Former Atlanta Brave Pete Orr (INF) went 2-for-2 with 2 R and an RBI.
Game 2
It Was Over When: Gwinnett couldn't shake the shutout bug for the second straight game.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: LHP Jose Ortegano (2-3), went 6.0 IP for just the second time in his G-Braves career, allowing just 2 hits and 1 R (unearned) - but was the unlucky loser.
At the plate: The G-Braves mustered a bit more offense in Game 2, but still couldn't get across the plate. The team left the bases loaded in 3rd inning with one out, and stranded men on second and third base with one down in the 5th. Catcher J.C. Boscan went 2-for-3, while Timmons walked twice but finished 0-for-1 - snapping his season high 12-game hitting streak.
The opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Erik Arnesen (2-2) went 5.0 IP and allowed 5 hits, no runs and struck out 3 to pick up the win.
At the plate: Syracuse got just a double by Orr and a single by 1B Jason Botts, but Pedro Lopez scored the only run of the game after getting on with a 3rd inning walk.
On Deck: Gwinnett takes on Syracuse tomorrow night at Coolray Field at 7:05 p.m. for the fifth game in the six-game set. The G-Braves will send Atlanta Braves RHP Jair Jurrjens (0-0, 6.75 ERA), who is on an MLB rehab assignment, to the mound against Syracuse LHP Matt Chico (1-3, 4.46 ERA). The game will be broadcast on WDUN-550 AM. The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive a Chopper bobblehead statue presented by Georgia Power.
