Lawrenceville, GA- The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Gwinnett Braves in a doubleheader by scores of 5-0 and 1-0 on Friday night. Craig Stammen earned the victory in the first game for the Chiefs and Erik Arnesen picked up the win in game two as Joel Peralta picked up the save.
Both ballgames were seven-inning games and the Chiefs, after dropping two to Gwinnett (31-37) on Thursday, held the Braves at bay through almost all of the first contest. Stammen pitched six and two thirds of an inning coming just one out shy of a no-hitter. Josh Anderson singled off of Stammen to break up the no-hit bid, but Stammen pitched the full seven innings of the first game.
Syracuse (40-29) got offensive contributions from Pete Orr and Jason Botts in the third inning of game one to break into the scoring column. Orr used an RBI double to score Boomer Whiting, and Botts followed with a sacrifice fly to score Orr as the Chiefs led 2-0 after three.
In the fifth, Botts would strike again tacking on an RBI double to push the Syracuse lead to 4-0. Justin Maxwell added his first home run since June 6th, a solo shot, leading off the sixth to push the margin to 5-0.
Todd Redmond took the loss for Gwinnett in game one. He went five and one third of an inning and gave way to Jeff Lyman who went the rest of the way in the losing effort.
In game two, which got underway just after 8:30, Erik Arnesen combined with Atahualpa Severino and Joel Peralta for the Syracuse victory Arnesen went five innings and allowed five hits, struck out three and walked four to improve to 2-2. Severino faced just two batters in the sixth and Peralta closed the game for a four out save, his 20th of the season.
The lone Chiefs run came in the third inning. Pedro Lopez was on third base after walking, being sacrificed over by Arnesen and then a fielders choice by Boomer Whiting. Justin Maxwell was the batter and he hit a ground ball to third base, which Wes Timmons threw to Joe Thurston at second base. Thurston neglected to tag second base in a double play attempt and no outs were recorded. Lopez scored, and that would be the only run of the game.
Jose Ortegano was charged with the loss and he falls to 2-3. The G-Braves starter threw six innings , allowing one run on two hits and striking out four.
On Saturday, the Chiefs and Braves will play at 7:05. The scheduled starters are Matt Chico (1-3, 4.46) for Syracuse and Jair Jurrjens (0-0, 6.75) for Gwinnett.
