G-Braves Shine In 4-3 Win Over Durham

The Gwinnett Braves defeated the Durham Bulls 4-3 on Monday afternoon at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The game was shown nationally on the MLB Network. G-Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman hit his fourth home run of the season, a 2-run shot to center field, while Joe Thurston had 2 RBI singles on the day. Gwinnett (8-11) is tied for third place in the International League South with the Charlotte Knights while Durham (14-5) remains in first place.

It Was Over When: After a 2-run home run by Dan Johnson brought the Bulls within one of the G-Braves, Bulls first baseman Chris Richard hit into a double play and Bulls shortstop Angel Chavez flied out to end the inning and their rally. Braves closer Craig Kimbrel was able to shut out the side in the bottom of the 9th.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Ryne Reynoso pitched 4.2 innings and held the Bulls to 1 run on 7 hits while striking out 2. Michael Dunn gained his first win of the season by striking out 3 in 2.1 IP. Craig Kimbrel was credited with his fourth save on the year.

At the plate: Second baseman Joe Thurston went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Center fielder Matt Young went 1-for-2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Shortstop Brandon Hicks went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Heath Rollins allowed 4 R/ER on 7 hits in his 4 innings of work. Richard De Los Santos held the G-Braves scoreless in the final 5 innings of the game.

At the plate: Designated hitter Dan Johnson's 2-run home run was his only hit for the day.

On Deck: Gwinnett return to Coolray Field as they host Norfolk in the first game of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. G-Braves RHP Tim Gustafson (0-1, 8.64 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Brandon Erbe (0-3, 7.98 ERA) of the Tides.
