Syracuse's Bernadina & Durham's Rodriguez Spark 1st Place Clubs As Players Of The Week
Published on April 26, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Syracuse outfielder Roger Bernadina and Durham pitcher Aneury Rodriguez have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 19-25. Rodriguez joins Jeremy Hellickson (April 12-18) to make Durham the first team in the IL to win multiple weekly awards in 2010.
ROGER BERNADINA, Syracuse Chiefs IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Syracuse outfielder Roger Bernadina has hit safely in 12 of the 13 games he's played this season at the Triple-A level, including all seven games during the past week. Five of his last six games were multi-hit efforts, giving him a League-best 13 hits to go along with a .464 average for the week. He had just one hit Monday at Lehigh Valley, but it drove in the winning run in the 8th inning. He then reeled off games with multiple hits on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and again on Friday, a game which included his second home run of the year. Saturday against Rochester, Bernadina got just one hit, but he also walked twice, stole two bases, and drove in two runs. He put a ribbon around his week yesterday afternoon, going 3-6 and making two outstanding defensive plays to save the game for the Chiefs. The center fielder threw out a runner at the plate to end the 10th inning, then made a leaping catch against the wall in the 12th in what would become a 13-inning Chiefs victory. Bernadina is now 3rd in the League with 22 hits and a .393 average on the year.
25-year-old Roger Bernadina is in his ninth season of professional baseball, still playing for the organization that drafted him in 2002. He first reached the Triple-A level in 2007 with Columbus before going on to play for Syracuse. He made his Major League debut with the Nationals in 2008, but last year he fractured his ankle making a catch against the Marlins, derailing most of his 2009 campaign. Bernadina is a native of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
ANEURY RODRIGUEZ, Durham Bulls IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
In his first two starts at the Triple-A level, Aneury Rodriguez could hardly have been more impressive. After looking sharp in two starts at Double-A Montgomery, Rodriguez was promoted to Durham where he was given the ball for Tuesday's game at Charlotte. In 7.0 innings, Rodriguez did not allow a runner past second base. He gave up just a walk and four hits while striking out six as Durham cruised to an 11-0 victory. Last night against Gwinnett, he was just as dominant. Once again going 7.0 innings, Rodriguez surrendered just one hit and two walks while striking out four. In two starts so far at the Triple-A level, Rodriguez has allowed five hits and three walks in 14.0 innings for an amazing WHIP of 0.57. Opposing batters are hitting just .109 against him. Rodriguez and teammate Jeremy Hellickson are the first ever pair of Durham Bulls to bring home IL Pitcher of the Week awards in consecutive weeks. The last team to accomplish the feat was Indianapolis with Eric Hacker and Daniel McCutchen in August of 2009.
22-year-old Aneury Rodriguez is in his sixth year as a professional pitcher. Originally signed by the Rockies, Rodriguez was dealt to Tampa Bay last April in exchange for pitcher Jason Hammel. He spent all of 2009 with Double-A Montgomery, going 9-11 with a 4.50 ERA. Rodriguez is a native of Higuey, Dominican Republic.
