April 26, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Following a one hour and 53 minute rain delay, right-handed pitcher Brad Lincoln allowed just one run and struck out five over seven strong innings to earn the victory, while every Indianapolis Indians' starter, reached base at least once to push past the Louisville Bats 6-1 on Sunday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
The win improves the Indians record to 7-10, while the loss drops the Bats to an identical 7-10 mark. The victory also gives Indianapolis a 3-2 advantage in the season series against Louisville.
Lincoln (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) was brilliant over seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out five to earn the victory and improve to 2-1. Following Lincoln, Tribe relievers Wil Ledezma (1.0 IP, 1 SO) and Jean Machi (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 SO) combined to allow just one hit and strike out four in two innings of relief.
While Lincoln anchored the Indians' pitching staff, the Tribe offense exploded for 15 hits led by three base knocks from 2B Neil Walker and four from RF Steve Pearce. Walker (3-for-5, 1 R, 3 RBI) also added a three-run double and is now tied with 3B Pedro Alvarez for the team lead in RBI with 12, while Pearce continues to sizzle at the plate adding an Indians' single game season best four base knocks to his team leading total, while also raising his batting average to an astounding .417.
The Indians jumped out to an early lead in the third inning as C Luke Carlin drew a lead-off walk, SS Argenis Diaz reached on an infield single, starter Brad Lincoln reached on a fielder's choice where Carlin was forced out at third base and CF Jose Tabata drew a base on balls. This set the stage for Walker, who came up with the bases loaded and came through with a clutch bases clearing double to give the Tribe a 3-0 lead.
Louisville got a run back the following frame when RF Chris Burke led off the frame with a triple to right field and came around to score when CF Chris Heisey grounded out to short.
The Tribe tacked on another run in the fifth with a two-out rally began by 1B Brian Myrow, who lined a single to right, moved to second on a base hit by Alvarez and came around to score on a double by Pearce. The base knock for Alvarez extended his hitting streak to seven games, while the RBI double for Pearce gives him an International League best nine two-baggers on the season.
Then in the seventh inning the Tribe sealed the victory with two more insurance runs off the bat of LF Brandon Moss, who drove a two-out double to right field to plate Walker and Pearce, who reached on a single and intentional walk earlier in the frame. Along with Pearce and Walker's offensive outburst, Moss (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Tabata (2-for-4, 1 R) also turned in multi-hit efforts for the Indians, while only Burke (2-for-4, 1 R) managed multiple base knocks for the Bats.
Bats starter Sam LeCure (6.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO), who was dominant in his first three starts of the season, was roughed up for 10 hits and four runs over six innings and was pinned with the loss to drop his record to 2-1.
The two teams wrap up their short two-game series on Monday, April 26 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Donnie Veal is expected to get the call for Indianapolis, while LHP Travis Wood is the probable starter for Louisville.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
Post-game quotes -- RHP Brad Lincoln
(on what he did to keep his focus during the one hour and 53 minute rain delay)
"I just relaxed and tried not to think or worry too much about the delay or starting on time. Stuff happens and you need to be able to adapt to any kind of situation. I just tried to stay focused and keep it loose in the clubhouse during the delay."
(on what was important for him in the victory)
"Command on both sides of the plate, with the fastball, early. Against a team that likes to swing the bat, you don't necessarily have to throw a strike to get them to swing at it. That was my game plan going against a team like this, put something on the pitch and get a little movement in the zone. Tonight, I was able to keep them off my fastball and command the inside part of the plate."
