Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Rochester Red Wings beat the Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, by a score of 9-6 in the series finale Monday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs (12-6) finished the home stand at 4-2.
After scoring only two runs in 13 innings on Sunday, the Red Wings (7-11) exploded for four runs in the third inning. Wilson Ramos started the scoring by pounding a one out homer just to the right of the left field foul pole to give Rochester a 3-1 lead. Danny Valencia doubled and Dustin Martin hit an RBI single to extend the inning. In total, nine runners came to the plate in the inning for the Red Wings.
Rochester got to Chiefs starter Collin Balester again in the fifth, as Martin singled home Valencia with one out to stretch the Red Wings' lead to 6-1. Brock Peterson's two run homer in Rochester's next at bat ended Balester's day and put the Red Wings ahead 8-1. Matt Tolbert's RBI triple later in the inning off of Jack Spradlin brought Matt Macri around the diamond for Rochester's fourth run of the inning.
Syracuse got solid production from the bottom of their lineup as the Chiefs six through nine hitters combined for nine of the team's 13 hits. Pete Orr (3-4, RBI) and Chris Duncan (two hits, two RBI) both knocked in runs and catcher Devin Ivany also chipped in with a pair of singles from the nine spot in the lineup. Orr's fifth inning home run broke an 0-19 spell for the shortstop.
International League batter batter of the week Roger Bernadina singled in the game to extend his hitting streak to ten games.
Collin Balester (1-2) pitched 4 1/3 innings in a losing effort for Syracuse, allowing 11 hits and eight runs. He also walked three batters. Jeff Manship (2-2) made it through the first six innings for the Red Wings, surrendering three runs on eight hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Anthony Slama closed the door for Rochester, pitching a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.
The Chiefs head to Toledo for the first game of a four game series tomorrow while the Red Wings will go home to begin an eight-game home stand. Syracuse's Shairon Martis (0-1, 7.07) will square off against the Mud Hens' Alfredo Figaro (2-0, 2.87) in the series opener in Toledo. First pitch will be at 6:30.
