Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves took the series opener against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 3-2 on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett (25-29) got four no-hit innings from starter Tim Gustafson, strong hitting from the top of the order and a breathtaking catch from OF Matt Young to sink the Yanks (31-24). The G-Braves remain 6.5 games out in second place behind International League South leaders Durham, while the Yankees are 1.5 games behind IL North-leading Syracuse in second place.
It Was Over When: Young queued up the highlight reel. His RBI triple ended up being the game-winning run, but his full-out diving catch onto the warning track in left center with a runner on second base in the top of the 8th inning saved the game for the G-Braves.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: RHP Gustafson (5-3) turned his recent streak of bad luck around, holding the opposition scoreless during his tenure on the mound for the first time in four starts. He finished with 6.0 IP, while allowing just 2 hits. Michael Dunn earned his 3rd save of the season, striking out 2 in 0.2 IP.
At the plate: The top three hitters in the order went a combined 5-for-9 as CF Jordan Schafer went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, 3B Wes Timmons was 2-for-3 with a run and 2B Joe Thurston finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Young had a triple and an RBI on a 1-for-4 night.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Romulo Sanchez (2-4), who beat the G-Braves in the opening game of the 2009 Governors' Cup Playoffs in his last start against them, didn't have the same stuff tonight as he was charged with the loss. He went 5.0 IP, allowing 6 hits, 3 R/2 ER, walked 4 and struck out just 1 along with a balk.
At the plate: Former G-Brave Reid Gorecki went 1-for-2 with a run, a stolen base and two walks.
On Deck: Gwinnett continues their series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in the second game of a four-game series at Coolray Field. RHP Chris Resop (4-1, 2.03 ERA) will start for the Braves, while the Yankees will send RHP Ivan Nova (2-2, 4.11 ERA). The game will be broadcast on WDUN-550 AM.
Etc: Due to manufacturing issues overseas, the Dave Brundage piggy bank will not be given away on Saturday, June 5. Delta Community Credit Union will instead be giving away water bottles to the first 2,500 fans on game day.
