G-Braves Fall To Charlotte In Opening Series Finale, 8-2

The Charlotte Knights defeated the Gwinnett Braves 8-2 on Sunday afternoon in the first day game of the 2010 season at Coolray Field. Matt Zaleski (RHP), today's starter for the Knights, outdueled Ryne Reynoso (RHP) for his first win of the season. Brent Clevlen went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, knocking in an RBI in the losing effort for Gwinnett. Gwinnett (2-2) is tied with Charlotte (2-2), Norfolk and Durham atop the International League South Division.

It Was Over When: With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth, RHP Cristhian Martinez allowed 2 runs (ER) in his first relief appearance since being optioned to the G-Braves this past Friday. The Knights plated 4 runs in the inning.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Ryne Reynoso pitched well in the loss to Charlotte, striking out 4 batters in 5.0 IP while allowing 3 R/3 ER. He held the Knights scoreless for 4.0 IP - the longest streak for a G-Braves pitcher this season.

At the plate: Clevlen had his second 2-hit game in as many days while Freddie Freeman found his stroke again with a 2-hit game of his own, including an RBI double in the eighth.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Zaleski pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and struck out 6 batters.

At the plate: Dayan Viciedo had a 2-run double in the sixth inning and C.J. Retherford sealed the victory with a 2-run homer off of RHP Cory Gearrin.

On Deck: Gwinnett hosts Durham in Game 1 of a three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at Coolray Field. G-Braves LHP Jonny Venters (1-0, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to face LHP Carlos Hernandez of the Bulls.
