Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell Sunday in the finale of the four-game series with Lehigh Valley 6-5. After three come-from-behind wins in a row, Syracuse couldn't muster enough for a comeback this time with outfielders Justin Maxwell, Marvin Lowrance and Kevin Mench going down in order to end the game.
In another back and forth game, the Chiefs entered the 9th inning with a 5-4 lead after Josh Whitesell's RBI double broke a tie in the seventh. Syracuse saw the lead slip away in the top half of the 9th when reliever Josh Wilkie surrendered a game-tying single off the bat of IronPigs shortstop Wilson Valdez. In the next at bat, Lehigh Valley took the lead for good after John Mayberry's groundout allowed outfielder Rich Thompson to score.
Justin Maxwell had another strong game for the Chiefs, reaching base in four out of his five plate appearances. He finished with two hits, three runs and two stolen bases. Catcher Carlos Maldonado chipped in with the Chiefs only home run, a two-run shot in the second inning.
Valdez was the star for Lehigh Valley going 3 for 5 to raise his batting average to .474 for the year. Second basemen Luis Maza was also productive for the IronPigs, collecting two hits and a walk in his first start of the year.
Reliever Scott Mathieson earned the victory for Lehigh Valley, tossing two shutout innings to close out the game. Wilkie dropped to 1-1 on the year for Syracuse. Sunday's game concluded the four-game series between the Chiefs and IronPigs. Lehigh Valley will begin a two-game set in Pawtucket tomorrow while Syracuse will stay at home to take on Buffalo. Syracuse's Luis Atilano and Buffalo's Bobby Livingston are the probable starting pitchers for Monday night's series opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M. at Alliance Bank Stadium.
