G-Braves Drop First Game of Road Trip, 9-5

The Lead: The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Gwinnett Braves 9-5 on Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. This was Gwinnett's second loss in a row. G-Braves second baseman Joe Thurston and right fielder Brent Clevlen accounted for 2 RBIs each in the loss. After coming into the game with no errors, Braves left fielder Mitch Jones had 2 errors in the game. Gwinnett (14-14) remains in second place in the International League South and 4 games behind Durham for first place. Syracuse (16-11) is tied for first place in the IL North division.

It Was Over When: After the G-Braves came from behind with a 4-run inning in the top of the 3rd inning to make the score 5-3, the team gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning - which put Syracuse in front 8-5. The Chiefs never gave up the lead for the rest of the game.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starter Todd Redmond (3-3) gave up 8 runs (6 ER) on 8 hits in 3.0 IP. Cristhian Martinez struck out 4 in 3.0 IP. Jeff Lyman held the Chiefs scoreless in his 2 innings of work.

At the plate: Clevlen went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs. Thurston went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. First baseman Freddie Freeman went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Starter Andrew Kown (1-2) struck out 4 G-Braves in 5.0 IP in the win. Joel Paralta earned his seventh save of the year, pitching a scoreless 9th inning.

At the plate: XXXX

On Deck: Gwinnett take on Syracuse in game two of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Alliance Bank Stadium. G-Braves RHP Ryne Reynoso (0-3, 5.55 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Stephen Strasburg in his first Triple-A start for the Chiefs.
