Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, opened their series against the Gwinnett Braves with a 9-5 victory Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. With the win, the Chiefs improved to 10-3 at home.
The Braves (14-14) got off to an early lead, tallying a run in the top of the second on Luis Bolivar's one-out double.
The Chiefs came right back in the home half of the inning, scoring three runs of their own on a home run by Seth Bynum. The line-drive homer was Bynum's fourth of the year.
Gwinnett got to Chiefs starter Andrew Kown again in the third with three singles to start the inning. Brent Clevlen tied the score at 3-3 with a 2-run double off the scoreboard in center. The Braves kept the inning going, scoring two more runs on second basemen Joe Thurston's double to the gap to make it 5-3.
Syracuse again had an answer, putting together a five-run, four-hit third inning. Luis Bolivar and Wes Timmons let Pete Orr's pop-up to left field fall for a bloop double to start the rally. Later in the inning, Kevin Mench and Josh Whitesell came around to score on Chase Lambin's bases loaded single to right, giving the Chiefs the 6-5 advantage. Syracuse extended the lead to 7-5 after Seth Bynum's chopper to third leaped over Wes Timmons' head, scoring Mike Morse. A hustling Lambin scored on Mitch Jones' errant throw to cap off the scoring.
Andrew Kown earned his first win of the year for the Chiefs, pitching five innings. He allowed five runs and nine hits. The Chiefs bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to preserve the win. Todd Redmond picked up the loss for the Braves, giving up eight hits and six earned runs over three innings.
Syracuse takes on Gwinnett again Friday night in game two of their four game series. Righthander Ryne Reynoso will get the start for the Braves against the Chiefs' Stephen Strasburg, who will be making his Triple-A debut. Strasburg went 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in five starts for Double-A Harrisburg. First pitch will be at 7:00.
