Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - The North American Soccer League (NASL) today unveiled the 2016 Spring and Fall Season schedule that will feature a 32-match regular season that will kick-off Sunday, April 3 with a rematch of the last year's soccer bowl as the Cosmos and Fury FC do battle in New York. Ottawa will host NASL newcomers Miami FC May 1 at TD Place in their 2016 Home Opener.
"What better way to open the season than a rematch of last year's final," said head coach Paul Dalglish. "While both clubs will look very different from the Championship Final this is how rivalries are born."
"I am excited with the team that we are building for the season ahead. Our fan support is also building and they are vital to our success. May 1 will be a thrilling day at TD Place."
After four straight road matches to open the season, the reigning Fall Season Champions will host Miami FC May 1 at TD Place which served as a fortress to the club in 2015 where they lost just twice in 16 matches.
Each club will play each other once in the Spring Season - five home and five away - for a total of 10 matches. Ottawa's bye-week in the spring campaign lands between their two Amway Canadian Championship matches against FC Edmonton.
The Fall Season will feature a 22-match schedule with each club playing each other twice - once home and once away. Miami FC and Rayo OKC will join the league to start the 2016 season, while expansion side Puerto Rico FC will come in at the start of the fall campaign.
Just as they did to open the Spring Season, Ottawa and New York will meet again to open the Fall Season three months later on July 2 in New York. In 2016, Fury FC posted the League's best-ever Fall Season record en route to the club's first-ever piece of silverware and eventual berth in The Championship.
The 32-match season will conclude October 29 when Fury FC host the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
Key Dates in 2016:
Season Opener: April 3 @ New York Cosmos
Spring Season Home Opener: May 1 vs Miami FC
Final Match, Spring Season: June 11 vs Rayo OKC
Fall Season Opener: July 2 @ New York Cosmos
Fall Season Home Opener: July 9 vs Rayo OKC
Final Match, Fall Season: October 29 vs Fort Lauderdale
The league's split-season competition, which led to an exciting postseason race down the stretch last year, will culminate with The Championship. As the league's four-team postseason tournament, The Championship features both the Spring Season Champion and Fall Season Champion, as well
as the two other teams with the best combined records from the Spring and Fall Seasons.
"It's incredible when you realize that we're less than 80 days away from the start of what will be our most exciting season yet," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. "Our clubs have made unbelievable progress this off-season, and with some of the signings and announcements being made across the league, the product on the field is going to be at an all-time high."
