FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB - The North American Soccer League (NASL) released its 2016 schedule on Thursday, revealing the full lineup of Spring Season and Fall Season matchups for its sixth season. The expanded 32-match schedule sees FC Edmonton opening their 2016 campaign against league newcomer Rayo OKC, April 2 before returning home on April 10 to face Minnesota United FC and 2015 Eddies leading scorer Lance Laing at Clarke Field.
Each club will play each other once in the Spring Season, hosting five clashes at home and playing the other five away for a grand total of 10 matches. In the Fall Season, when expansion side Puerto Rico FC joins the fold, each club will play each other twice - once home and once away - for a total of 22 matches.
"The fact that we get to open our season up against another new franchise is exciting in itself," FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller said. "We don't have to compete with the 95-degree heat...Oklahoma will be as cool as Edmonton, possibly. It's nice to get that one under our belt nice and early. Then, you look at the visit of Minnesota...the fact that Lance Laing is returning, it will be good to not welcome, but to say hello. I think it will be good for our fans to see Laingy. For us, it's a big game. It's our Home Opener against arguably one of the top teams in the league."
After a trip to Florida to face Tampa Bay Rowdies, the Eddies return home to clash with Canadian rival and 2015 NASL runners-up Ottawa Fury FC, April 24 in an Amway Cup Championship (ACC) preview. It will mark the first meeting between Canadian national teammates Nik Ledgerwood, former Eddie Kyle Porter and Ottawa captain Julian de Guzman in NASL competition.
After a two-game road trip, Edmonton opens up their 2016 ACC bid against Ottawa in the first leg of the ACC Preliminary Round, May 11 before returning to league action to host 2015 NASL Champions New York Cosmos on May 15. The Eddies conclude their Spring Season at Clarke Field, June 12 against Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
Things kick back into gear on July 2, as the Eddies visit Rayo OKC once again for their Fall Season Opener, before returning to Clarke Field for back-to-back fixtures versus Fort Lauderdale and Fury FC, July 10 and 17 respectively. Fans will be able to see NBA star Carmelo Anthony's Puerto Rico FC for the first time at Clarke Field when the expansion side makes the trip north on Aug. 28. The Eddies lone trip of the NASL season to Ottawa occurs a week later, before the team returns home to host Miami FC on Sept. 11. Edmonton closes out their Fall Season home matches against Jacksonville Armada, Oct. 23 before heading on the road for their final clash of the season against Miami FC on Oct. 29.
"I look at our schedule and we get the Cosmos at home, Fort Lauderdale have been very successful in the past couple seasons in particular and done very well," Miller added. "It's great to get Ottawa both in the league as well as the Amway Cup Championship. I always get excited about Amway, it's a great advert for Canadian football. These are all very, very exciting fixtures, it's a great home schedule for us."
The league's split-season competition, which led to an exciting postseason race down the stretch last year, will culminate with The Championship. As the league's four-team postseason tournament, The Championship features both the Spring Season Champion and Fall Season Champion, as well as the two other teams with the best combined records from the Spring and Fall Seasons.
