Frosty Five: Frosty Faceoff in Frisco
January 25, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Dubuque Fighting Saints (23-9-1-3, 50 pts) kick off the fifth-annual USHL Frosty Cup on Thursday night at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas against the Sioux Falls Stampede (19-15-2-1, 41 pts).
Here are five things to know about the matchup:
1. Frosty Frenzy
The Fighting Saints make their way to Texas to participate in the USHL's fifth annual Frosty Cup. The Frosty Cup includes a massive youth tournament throughout the week and its main event is a pair of USHL contests.
Dubuque, the leading team in the Eastern Conference, will take on Sioux Falls, the third-place team in the West, for two games in Texas. The USHL and the Dallas Stars host the event at the Stars' facilities.
2. Frozen Frisco
Thursday's game will be played in Frisco at the Comerica Center where the Dallas Stars have their practice facility.
Chase LaPinta returns to his hometown for Thursday's contest. The Frisco native played two years for the Dallas Stars Elite 16U AAA program, scoring 22 goals in 36 games.
3. Fishing Fun
Fisher Scott logged a pair of assists in the Saints' win on Saturday against Des Moines, including an assist on his defense partner Joona Väisänen's fifth goal of the season.
Combined, Scott and Väisänen have a plus-35 rating and 43 points as the Saints' top pair. The duo has played on the same blue-line unit in 28 of Dubuque's 36 games this year. The only games in which they did not line up next to each other were the eight games while Väisänen was at the World Junior Championships with Team Finland.
4. Fighting Flight
The Frosty Cup marks the Fighting Saints only plane trip of the season, providing Dubuque a unique USHL experience.
"It's different, we don't have a long bus ride," said forward Michael Barron. "It should be fun and exciting."
5. Facing Falls
In their only two meetings of the season, the Fighting Saints and Stampede face off as two of the top-four scoring offenses in the USHL. Dubuque is second with 157 goals, while Sioux Falls has the third-most goals in the USHL with 135.
The Saints and Stampede meet at the Frosty Cup for the first time since Feb. 2020, a 4-2 Saints win in Dubuque. Overall, the Fighting Saints have a 10-game point streak against Sioux Falls dating back to 2016. In that span, the Saints have won seven of the 10 games.
Thursday's game begins at 7:00 p.m. CST from the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. It can be found on Eagle 102.3 and FloHockey.
