Fronts Beat Generals 5-2 for First Win of the Season
September 22, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release
Friday night was Kingston's first opportunity to play on home ice for the 2018-19 season. The new season didn't start the way the Frontenacs had hoped for in Peterborough on Thursday night. The Petes held Kingston off the scoreboard and won the game 4-0. Oshawa was the team standing in the way of Kingston's first win. The Generals were playing their first game of the season as they looked to contend for an Eastern Conference title this season. Many new faces were in the Kingston lineup to start the season including first round pick Jake Murray.
Kingston wasn't able to get on the board Thursday night, but it only took them 1:08 to break the seal Friday. Brett Neumann used the stick lift to perfection and stole the puck before Oshawa could leave their own zone. Neumann quickly spun around and beat Cole Ceci between the legs for Kingston's first goal of the season. Later in the period, Dawson Baker, who was acquired early this week from Sudbury, got a big cheer from fans after throwing a big, clean body check. Brendan Bonello stood tall and held Oshawa scoreless meaning the Frontenacs led 1-0 after twenty minutes.
The scoring picked up in the second frame. Kingston extended their lead to 2-0 with another early period goal. Star forward Jason Robertson buried his first of the season off a fresh face-off win by Brett Neumann. The Generals cut the lead in half when Serron Noel scored on a breakaway just over a minute later. Jason Robertson made it 3-1 Kingston on a goal from Dawson Baker and Jake Murray. It was Baker's first point with the Fronts and it was Jake Murray's first career point. Robertson finished the hat trick on a power play later in the period, this time on a sweet pass from Brett Neumann, to make the lead 4-1 for Kingston. Domenico Commisso cut the lead to 4-2 on a nice one timer just after Kingston had killed the first of two penalties. The 5 on 3 had ended but the Kingston player wasn't able to get back in the play before the goal. Jason Robertson's three goals in the period gave Kingston a 4-2 lead to take into the dressing room.
Brendan Bonello stood tall in his home end for the final period. The Fronts gave up some shots but cleared the net after the first save by their goaltender. Ian Derungs scored his first career goal on an empty net after Oshawa pulled Cole Ceci for the extra attacker. The goal made it 5-2, which was the final score.
Kingston's win was their first of the season, but also the first career win for head coach Kurtis Foster. Ian Derungs and Jake Murray each recorded their first career point.
Kingston heads out on their first road trip of the season next weekend visiting Niagara, Erie and Mississauga. They return to Leon's Centre on October 5th to face the Soo Greyhounds.
