Daytona Tortugas News Release
TAMPA, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (7-3, 43-36) broke up a no-hitter in the sixth inning and erupted for five runs in the frame to take a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Yankees (8-5, 50-32) at Steinbrenner Field Tuesday night. Seven different Tortugas had a hit, while Aristides Aquino paced the offense with a pair of hits and RBIs. It was the third straight win for the Tortugas and the 14th in their last 18 games.
The Yankees scored first when Jorge Mateo doubled off the third base bag and came around to score on an Austin Aune double to center field for the 1-0 lead.
The Tortugas responded in the fourth with an Aristides Aquino RBI groundout to short, plating Blake Trahan to tie the game. After being no-hit through the first five innings, Daytona's offense then came to life in the sixth.
Daytona scored five runs, all with two outs, in the inning while sending 10 men to the plate. Gavin LaValley broke up the no-hitter with a go-ahead RBI double to left field to score Trahan, who drew a walk, with one out in the inning to make it a 2-1 lead. The Tortugas would continue their two out assault with an RBI double from Aquino, and run scoring singles by Ronald Bueno, Garrett Boulware, and Jonathan Reynoso to break the game open, 6-1.
Tampa would attempt a rally in the ninth for the second straight game by loading the bases against RHP Jeremy Kivel. Thairo Estrada singled home Abiatal Avelino to make it a 6-2 game before RHP Alex Powers notched his first save since 2014 with back-to-back strikeouts. He fanned rehabber Mason Williams to leave the tying run at the plate.
Tortugas starter RHP Tejay Antone (7-5) earned the win, as he worked seven innings, allowed an earned run, scattered seven hits, and struck out three. Tampa starter RHP Yefrey Ramirez (1-1) suffered the loss, as he carried the no-hitter through five complete innings before getting in trouble in the five-run sixth for Daytona.
Daytona looks for the series sweep Wednesday at Steinbrenner Field. RHP Wendolyn Bautista (1-0, 1.74 ERA) will make the start for the Tortugas, while the Yankees counter with RHP Will Carter (1-2, 5.66 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: Daytona earned their tenth series victory with the win. They have won five straight series and have not lost any of their last 11 series (5/13-15, swept by Lakeland in four game series)...Gavin LaValley (2-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 14 games, while Jonathan Reynoso (1-for-4) moved his to 15...The Tortugas will look for their fourth series sweep of the season. The last time they swept an FSL opponent was June 12-15, when they swept Jupiter in four games. ------=_20160705225117000000_32151
