Daytona Tortugas News Release
Tampa, FL - " Jimmy Herget stranded the tying runs on-base, as the Daytona Tortugas (6-3, 42-36) shut out the Tampa Yankees (8-4, 50-31), 2-0, Monday night at George Steinbrenner Field. Ty Washington hit his fifth home run in as many games, Gavin LaValley extending his hitting streak to 13, and LHP Ismael Guillon tossed six scoreless innings for the second straight start. Daytona used their eighth shutout of the year to propel themselves within a half game of first place.
It was the same script for the Tortugas offense, as they scored in their first at-bat of the ballgame for the fifth time in their last six games. Washington provided his own holiday fireworks by leading the game off with a solo homer to left field for the swift 1-0 lead. It was the second straight day Washington cracked a lead-off homerun, including yesterday's suspended game.
In the fourth, LaValley extended his hitting streak with a run scoring double that one-hopped the right field wall to score Angelo Gumbs, who singled to begin the inning, and doubled the Daytona lead, 2-0.
Tampa attempted to rally against Tortugas' closer RHP Jimmy Herget in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Devyn Bolasky singled to left and Thairo Estrada doubled down the left field line to put the tying runs in scoring position. However, Herget responded by striking out Connor Spencer to end the threat and earn his 15th save of the season. The right-handed closer has been perfect in save opportunities this season.
Guillon (3-2) tossed six scoreless innings, allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out one, to earn consecutive victories. It was back-to-back starts for the southpaw where he worked six innings and didn't yield an earned run. Yankees LHP Ian Clarkin (6-7) suffered the loss, as he worked seven innings and allowed a pair of runs, while striking out six.
The series continues Tuesday, when RHP Tejay Antone (6-5, 4.18 ERA) counters Tampa's RHP Yefrey Ramirez (1-0, 1.29 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: It was Daytona's first shutout since their 3-0 victory in Clearwater on June 28th...Guilon has not allowed a run in his last 12 2/3 innings pitched, winning back-to-back starts for the first time since August, 2013...Aristide's Aquino's 17-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-3 night...Daytona has won 7 of their last 10 and 13 of their last 17 games...Tampa has now been shutout in back-to-back games and have not scored in their last 19 innings
