Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - For the ninth straight game, the Tampa Yankees (8-4, 50-31) held an opponent to two runs or less. However, a lack of offense allowed the Daytona Tortugas (6-3, 42-36) to take the series-opener, 2-0, on Monday night, the 4th of July, at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Ian Clarkin (L, 6-7) recorded his team-leading seventh quality start for Tampa. The southpaw allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings, walking one while striking out six. Clarkin threw 62 of 90 pitches for strikes.

Ty Washington began the game by hitting his fourth home run of the season, giving Daytona an early 1-0 lead. Later, Angelo Gumbs hit a ground ball up the middle for a leadoff single in the fourth. Gavin LaValley followed with a double into the right field corner. Gumbs scored on the hit, beating a relay throw to the plate by Jorge Mateo.

Austin Aune and Abiatal Avelino each singled with one out in the fourth before a groundball double play by Devyn Bolasky ended the Tampa threat.

Ismael Guillon (W, 3-2) held the Yankees scoreless in six innings of work, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out one. The righty tossed 44 of his 77 pitches for strikes.

RHP Jordan Foley tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Clarkin, tallying a walk and five strikeouts in the eighth and ninth without allowing a hit.

LHP Brennan Bernardino and RHP Ariel Hernandez held the Yankees to a walk in a pair of scoreless frames in relief of Guillon. Tampa placed the tying runs into scoring position in the ninth against RHP Jimmy Herget.

In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, Bolasky singled into left. Thairo Estrada followed with a double into the left field corner. Herget (SV, 15) struck out Connor Spencer to secure the win for Daytona.

Mateo (1-for-3, BB), Aune (1-for-3, BB), Bolasky (1-for-3, BB) and Francisco Diaz (1-for-2, HBP) reached base apiece. Trey Amburgey (0-for-3, BB) made his debut with Tampa. Mason Williams (0-for-4) hit leadoff as the designated hitter in his first rehab game with the T-Yanks.
