Everett AquaSox News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - The AquaSox were defeated by the Eugene Emeralds, 5-1, Monday night at Everett Memorial Stadium. The Sox lead the league in runs scored, but had a tough time doing just that as they were 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Left-hander Steven Ewing (3-2) started for the AquaSox and recorded the loss, despite tossing 5.2 solid innings. Ewing allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk to go along with four strikeouts.

The Emeralds scored their first run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Frogs looked like they would answer in the home half of the third when Ketel Marte reached third base with no outs, but Eugene starter Justin Hancock got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Eugene would score a couple more runs in the fifth to take a 3-0 advantage over the Sox. Ewing nearly escaped with no runs in the inning, but with two outs the Ems rallied to score their first run of the inning on a drag bunt. First base was left open when Ewing, Jamodrick McGruder and Taylor Ard all charged to make a play on the bunted ball. The next Emerald batter followed with a single to plate the second run of the inning.

The Sox scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by McGruder. Mike Faulkner scored on the play after reaching on a walk, and advancing around the bases on a defensive indifference and a wild pitch.

Marte recorded two hits in the game, and the shortstop has now recorded three consecutive multi-hit games.

The AquaSox (12-15, 40-25) will look to win the rubber match Tuesday night when they face the Emeralds (16-12, 40-25) in the final game of the three-game series. Right-hander Dylan Unsworth (6-1, 3.91 ERA) will start for the Frogs, and will be opposed by right-hander Will Scott (2-4, 5.21 ERA) of Eugene.
