YAKIMA, Wash. - Steve Rodriguez lined an infield single off the glove of first-baseman Dan Vogelbach in the bottom of the ninth to score Kevin Medrano from second, as the Yakima Bears rallied for an 8-7 victory over the Boise Hawks at County Stadium.
The Bears, who trailed 5-0 and 7-2, recorded their 20th-straight win when scoring six-or-more runs in a game and picked up their second walk-off winner of the year to pull within four games of Boise in the East Division standings.
Trailing 7-2 with two outs in the seventh, Yakima loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two infield singles, with Joe Loftus hitting a broken-bat three-run double to left to get the Bears within 7-5. An inning later, a two-out walk to Mark Ginther chased reliever Hunter Ackerman, with Mike Lang depositing the first Tyler Bremer offering over the wall in left for a game-tying homer.
In the ninth, Medrano led off with a double and Loftus walked. After a pair of flyball outs, Rodriguez hit a streamer at Vogelbach, who knocked the ball down to his left - but Medrano, who was off on contact, never stopped at third, scoring ahead of the throw home for the game winner.
Boise jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth - as Xavier Batista doubled home a run in the second, Vogelbach hit a mammoth homer to lead off the third, Trey Martin doubled home two in the third, and Willson Contreras delivered an RBI fielders' choice. After a trio of Hawks' errors in the fifth allowed two Yakima runs score, Marco Hernandez hit a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 7-2.
Medrano and Josh Parr each had two hits for Yakima, as Enrique Burgos got the win, working out of a first and third jam in the ninth - striking out three. Vogelbach and Stephen Bruno each had three hits in the loss for the Hawks.
The final game of the series is tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. (MT), with Pierce Johnson meeting Alex Carreras.
