Frisco RoughRiders News Release
AMARILLO, Texas - The Frisco RoughRiders pounded the Amarillo Sod Poodles 21-2 on Friday night from HODGETOWN. The Riders set and tied multiple franchise records, including most runs (21), the largest margin of victory (19 runs), most home runs in a game (tied with eight), most runs in a single inning (11) and most hits by one player in a single game (Blaine Crim with five).
The Riders (30-24, 66-57) collected 23 hits, led by Crim with five. Kellen Strahm (four), Aaron Zavala (three), Justin Foscue (three), Josh Stowers (three), Jonathan Ornelas (two) and Scott Kapers (two) all recorded multi-hit contests as well.
Frisco exploded out the gates early with three runs in the first inning. Crim began the scoring with an RBI single before Strahm singled in a run and Trevor Hauver lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
Amarillo (28-26, 60-63) answered back in the bottom of the first when Blaze Alexander doubled in a tally against Riders starter Mason Englert (1-0), who made his Double-A debut on Friday. Englert allowed just one run on five hits over five innings while striking out seven and not walking a batter.
The Riders then showed off their power in the third. Foscue rammed a two-run home run, his third of the series and his 13th of the season, before Crim went back-to-back with him for his 20th of the year. Crim has hit four home runs in the last three games. Stowers then punctuated the inning with a two-run blast of his own to balloon the score to 8-1 Frisco.
In the fifth, the RoughRiders blew the game open with an 11-run frame, the highest-scoring single inning in the history of pro baseball in Frisco. Kapers started things with a solo home run, his first in Double-A, before Ornelas went back-to-back with him with a solo shot of his own for his 14th long ball of the year. Two batters later, Foscue crushed his second home run of the day - a two-run shot - to give him his 14th on the year and the Riders a 12-1 lead. It was Foscue's first multi-home run game of the season.
Following and RBI single from Stowers, Kapers doubled in two runs, Ornelas ripped an RBI single and Zavala demolished a three-run home run to cap the inning and increase the lead to 19-1.
That tied the franchise record of 19 runs in a game and the Riders wasted no time breaking it as Hauver plated Crim with an RBI ground out in the sixth to push the lead to 20-1.
Amarillo answered back with a Roby Enriquez solo home run in the sixth, but Hauver crushed a solo shot of his own in the ninth to give the Riders their third game in franchise history with eight home runs in a game.
Kevin Gowdy was strong out of the Riders bullpen, throwing two perfect innings with five strikeouts in his outing.
Bryce Jarvis (3-5) took the loss for Amarillo in his start, allowing eight runs over his 2.2 innings.
Though the RoughRiders won, a Midland win kept Frisco at the top of the Texas League South Division in the second half by just one game with 14 games remaining.
The RoughRiders and Sod Poodles meet for game five of the six-game series on Saturday, September 3rd at 7:05 p.m. from HODGETOWN. LHP Avery Weems (2-6, 5.29) gets the start for Frisco against RHP Slade Cecconi (7-5, 4.27).
Frisco returns home to begin their final home stand of the regular season on Tuesday, September 6th with an 11:05 a.m. start on an Olsson Education Day at Riders Field.
