FRISCO, February 9, 2010 - The shortest NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner in history will return to the stage of his victory this year as NBA D-League Frisco President of Basketball Operations, Spud Webb judges the 2010 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest.
In 1986, Webb, all 5-foot-6 of him, shocked the basketball world by defeating Atlanta Hawks teammate and defending Dunk Contest champion Dominique Wilkins, standing at 6-foot-8, with a dazzling array of dunks.
"Having lived in Dallas my entire life, it's great to finally see the All-Star game back here," Webb said. "This event brings back a lot of great memories and I'm looking forward to the contest."
The 1986 All-Star Weekend festivities were held in Dallas.
"Arguably the biggest upset in All-Star history happened right here 25 years ago at the hands of one of its proudest native sons," Frisco D-League Owner Donnie Nelson commented. "Hometown hero Spud Webb's historic performance that day goes down as one of the single greatest accomplishments in our sport. Spud's humility and passion for Boys and Girls Clubs, as well as numerous other charities, is evidence that he's never forgotten where his roots are. Spud's the kind of person that makes a difference in our community every day."
Webb has stayed involved with the Dunk Contest throughout the years. In 2006, once again in Texas, this time in Houston, Webb assisted 5-foot-9 Nate Robinson to the title as Webb tossed the basketball to Robinson as the young Knick leaped over Webb.
"I could make that dunk anytime," Webb commented. "I expect Nate not to use props this time. I hope to see some new dunks, otherwise I may have to go put some shorts on and see if I have any springs left in these legs."
Robinson, who also won the 2009 Contest, leads the field into Dallas as he looks to become the first three-time champion. Shannon Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers and Gerald Wallace of the Charlotte Bobcats will join Robinson in the Contest.
DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors and Eric Gordon of the Los Angeles Clippers will participate in single-round NBA All-Star Dunk-Off to determine the fourth contestant.
The Dunk Contest consists of two rounds of two dunks per competitor. Only the two competitors with the highest point tallies participate in the second round.
The Dunk Contest, held at the American Airlines Center, will air on TNT at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
