Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Nate Freiman's two-run homer was the only TinCaps' offense in a rainshortened 2-1 win over the Burlington Bees, Saturday at Parkview Field. Rain and lightning halted the game in the seventh inning.

LHP Jose De Paula delivered five strong innings and LHP Jeff Ibarra picked up his first career save with a pair of scoreless frames in relief.

The Bees jumped ahead in the top of the first. Gerard Hall drew a leadoff walk, then Jose Bonilla blooped a double to right. Whit Merrifield reached on an infield single to drive Hall home, but De Paula retired the next three batters in order to sidestep further damage.

The TinCaps didn't get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning. Jedd Gyorko smacked a one-out single. Freiman followed by scorching a line drive over the wall in dead center field to put Fort Wayne ahead, 2-1.

Burlington threatened in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on base with two outs, but Ibarra struck out the last batter before lightning forced the umpires to clear the field and eventually call the game.

De Paula (5-3) was the winning pitcher; Burlington RHP Keaton Hayenga (1-8) took the loss. Ibarra notched his first save.

Fort Wayne upped its record to 15-13 in the half, 51-47 for the season. Burlington fell to 13-13 in the second half, 35-60 for the year.

The TinCaps continue the three-game series against the Bees (Class-A Kansas City Royals) Sunday at Parkview Field at 3:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Pedro Hernandez (2-3) takes the ball against Burlington RHP Sugar Ray Marimon (2-2).
