MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Former Myrtle Beach Pelicans first baseman Freddie Freeman has been voted by team managers as the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for June, the league announced today.

Freeman, who was promoted to Double-A Mississippi following the Pelicans' series-opening 8-1 win over the Salem Red Sox on July 3, batted .337 (30-for-89) with two home runs and 12 RBIs over the course of 24 June games. Freeman's .302 average in 70 total games this season ranks fifth among qualifying Carolina League players. The Villa Park, California resident swatted six total homers and drove in 34 runs in a Pelicans uniform this season.

The Braves' second-round draft pick in 2007, Freeman entered this season as Baseball America's fifth-best prospect in the Atlanta organization. Following a 2008 campaign in which he hit .316 with 18 home runs and 95 RBIs for Class A Rome, Freeman was named the Braves' Minor League Organizational Player of the Year and was also selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star team.

This honor is a first for a Pelicans player in 2009. Myrtle Beach third baseman Donell Linares and former right fielder Jason Heyward, who joined Freeman in last week's promotion to Mississippi, were each named Carolina League Player of the Week earlier this season. Linares earned the award for May 25-31, and Heyward did so two weeks earlier, from May 11-17. Freeman is the first Pelicans player to capture Player of the Month recognition from Carolina League managers.

The Pelicans open the back end of a seven-game homestand with the Potomac Nationals visiting for a three-game set from Tuesday-Thursday this week. Dollar Hot Dog Night returns for Tuesday night's series opener, and Thirsty Thursday concludes the set on the 9th. Tickets are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling the Pelicans at (843) 918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
