Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, Ky. - The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, extended their winning streak to a season-high three games with an 8-3 victory over the Normal CornBelters.
In the Freedom's third-straight victory, Stetson Nelson pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings, while the offense drove in five of its eight runs with two outs.
For the second consecutive game, Florence (11-25) jumped on the scoreboard in the opening frame courtesy of Andrew Godbold. This time, the Florence outfielder ripped a line drive, two-run home run to the opposite field.
The Freedom extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning with three consecutive hits. Josh Henderson ripped a ball to center, Isaac Wenrich served one into left-center, and then Garrett Vail scored Henderson from second with his base hit down the left-field line.
After going down 1-2-3 in the first two innings, the CornBelters (15-22) drove in three run on four hits against Nelson in the third. The Freedom answered right back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out single from Henderson.
Back on the hill with a 4-3 lead, Nelson stayed steady, only allowing three more base runners in his final 3 1/3 innings of work.
Florence extended its lead to 6-3 with three more two-out hits in the fifth inning. After Cuthrell singled to keep the inning alive, Henderson tripled him home, and then Wenrich plated Henderson with a base hit.
Nelson, Pete Levitt, and Davis Adkins held Normal scoreless in the seventh and eighth before the Freedom broke open the game with two more runs. Vail led off the eighth with a walk and scored all the way from first on a double from Travis Weaver. Weaver moved to third on the throw and cruised home on a single from Daniel Fraga.
Ethan Gibbons only allowed a one-out single on his way to shutting the door in the ninth. The Florence bullpen totaled 2 1/3 innings and only allowed one base runner.
Offensively, Godbold continued his hot hitting. He is now 9-for-13 with four doubles, two home runs, and nine RBIs on the home stand. Henderson matched Godbold with three hits and two RBIs, while Fraga, Wenrich and Weaver also chipped in with multi-hit games.
Mike Fish was the only CornBelter to have a pair of hits on the day, as the Florence pitching staff limited the team to just six. Vince Apicella took the loss in 3 1/3 innings (four runs), while Michael Chavarria took ball from there.
The Freedom look to extend their winning streak tomorrow against the CornBelters. Normal's Mike Schweiss (2-2, 2.33 ERA) will face off against Florence's Patrick McGrath (1-3, 7.51 ERA). With first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
