Joliet Slammers News Release

Joliet, IL- The Joliet Slammers presented by ATI Physical Therapy have scored 40 runs in their last four home games after scoring 10 runs against the Lake Erie Crushers on Star Wars Night Friday, June 24. Joliet won the game 10-3 in front of 3,246 fans.

Boo Vazquez hit a grand slam in the second inning to cap off a six-run second inning for the Slammers to give them a seven run lead early in the game. Vazquez homered later in the game to give him 10 home runs on the season, which leads the Frontier League.

"It feels real good," Vazquez said. "I'm just glad to get the win. We played real well, Spencer (Medick) pitched his butt off, and we just played a complete game."

Justin Sinibaldi started on the mound for Lake Erie and was pulled in the second inning after the grand slam by Vazquez. Only one of the seven runs was charged to Sinibaldi as the Crushers' defense made three costly errors.

The Slammers are in a battle for first place with the Windy City Thunderbolts, sitting just .5 games out of first place behind the Thunderbolts. The Slammers split their two-game series with Windy City Wednesday and Thursday.

The Thunderbolts were also in action Friday night and they defeated the Traverse City Beach Bums 6-5 to hold on to their lead in first place for another day.

Vazquez single-handedly beat the Lake Erie Crushers, but the rest of the Slammers got themselves involved as well. Vazquez and Marc Flores both homered in the fifth inning to make it 10-3.

After hitting a home run earlier in the game, Vazquez said he was not looking for any particular pitch.

"Just see it and hit it, really," Vazquez said. "Just look for a good pitch, no matter what it is and put a good swing on it. Not really looking for anything, but there they just made mistakes and my swing felt good so it went out."

Carter Bell singled after the home run by Vazquez, and Flores homered on the first pitch he saw from the Crushers' new pitcher Brad Duffy. The Slammers have the second most home runs in the Frontier League following the Normal CornBelters.

Charlie White scored the first run of the game for the Slammers. Alfredo Rodriguez attempted to steal second base and was thrown out, but White came home on the throw to second base.

Melvin Rodriguez also drove in a pair of runs in the second inning on a single.

Spencer Medick got the start on the mound for the Slammers and recorded the win. Medick had run support from the start and shut down the Crushers' offense. He allowed three runs on nine hits in eight innings pitched.

Medick's strong performance on the mound moves him to 4-0 on the season.

Vazquez's pair of home runs and five RBIs earned him Friday night's Merchants and Manufacturers player of the game.

The Slammers offense has been unstoppable at Silver Cross Field the last four games, and Vazquez said it is the fans that make the difference for them.

The Slammers and Crushers will be back at Silver Cross Field Saturday at 6 p.m.
