(Florence, KY) - Four proved to be the lucky number for the Florence Freedom (3-0), presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, on Saturday night. The Freedom scored four runs in the third and four more runs in the fourth on their way to a 10-4 victory over the Joliet Slammers (0-3).
The victory helped Florence remained undefeated and complete a sweep of the Slammers at UC Health Stadium.
Florence kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Red hot Cody Bishop started the threat with a lead-off single. Steve Carrillo followed with a walk. Austin Newell drove Bishop in with a sharp single to right while Carrillo moved to third. Carrillo came around to score on a double play to give the Freedom a 2-0 lead after two frames.
The Freedom's offense exploded in the third inning. Daniel Fraga started things off with a double. Fraga came around to score on a Sean Mahley single. Jake Luce then drove Mahley in with an RBI double but he was thrown out attempting to turn it into three bases. Sam Eberle unloaded with the bases empty for a long solo home run, his second of the season. Bishop followed suit, crushing his second home run of the season over the right field fence. Bishop's home run capped the scoring in the third, helping the Freedom pad their lead to 6-0 after three.
Florence added four more runs in the fourth. Michael Pair led off with a double and moved to third on an infield single from Elvin Rodriguez. A Daniel Fraga single scored Pair and Rodriguez came around to score on a Slammer fielding error that allowed Zack Burling to reach first. Fraga scored the ninth run of the ballgame for the Freedom on Newell's sacrifice fly. Eberle closed out the scoring by ripping a double that scored Burling. Florence held a 10-0 lead after four.
Freedom starter Chuck Weaver (1-0) picked up his first win of the season by firing five and two thirds innings, allowing three runs while striking out three Slammers.
The Freedom return to action on Tuesday night when the Frontier Greys visit. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. eastern time. Click here for tickets.
