Slammers Fall to Freedom in Game 3

Florence, KY -Two big innings help the Florence Freedom (3-0) sweep the Joliet Slammers (0-3) with 10-4 final in game three of the season-opening series.

The Freedom brought the big bats out early against pitcher Jordan Wellander. LF Cody Bishop led off the third inning with a single and moved to second on a 3B Steve Carrillo walk. RF Austin Newell drove in Bishop with a single, and Carrillo later scored when C Michael Pair grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, putting the Freedom up 2-0 after the first inning.

Florence added to their lead in the fourth inning. 2B Daniel Fraga led off with a double. DH Sean Mahley moved him over with a signal and CF Jake Luce cleared the bases with a double before being tagged out moving to third. 1B Sam Eberle and Bishop then followed then followed with back-to-back home runs to put the Freedom up 6-0. The Freedom added on with four runs against pitcher Andrew Strenge in the fourth to make it 10-0.

The Slammers got one of those runs back in the fifth inning. With one out CF Charlie White blasted a home run to right to get the Slammers on the board. The Slammers then scored two in the sixth. DH Russell Moldenhauer singled and SS Alfredo Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. Jack Cleary then singled and back-to-back walks scored Moldenhauer and Rodriguez, cutting the Freedom lead to 10-3.

The Slammers put another run across in the seventh inning. 1B Chris Serritella reached on an error to lead off the inning. He would later score on an RBI single by Alfredo Rodriguez. The Slammers bullpen also shut down the Freedom after the fourth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Slammers lost 10-4. Jordan Wellander (0-1) took the loss. White earned the Merchant and Manufacturers Bank player of the game honors.
