May 16, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford Aviators News Release
The Rockford Aviators made it two-in-a-row to start the 2015 Frontier League season by defeating the Gateway Grizzlies 6-2 Saturday Night at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, IL. It was the second straight 6-2 win in the series for Rockford, not to mention the second straight night that the Aviators broke a 2-2 tie in the 7th inning.
Tanner Witt's two-run double turned out to be the game-winning hit in Saturday's contest as Rockford scored four times in the 7th to take control of the game. Elijah Trail had initially tied the game in the 5th with his first homer of the season. DH Greg Velasquez led a nine hit attack by going 3-for-3 and reaching base in all five plate appearances.
Righthander Tony Rizzotti pitched the first five innings for Rockford allowing just two runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Mike Holbeck (1-0) picked up the win in relief as he led a parade of four relievers who shut down the Grizzlies.
David Murillo (0-1) suffered the loss for Gateway after taking over for starter Tyler Thompson, who worked the first five for the Grizzlies.
The two teams will conclude the series Sunday night at 6:05pm CT before the Aviators return to for their home opener Tuesday night (May 19th, 7:05pm) against Traverse City at Aviator's Stadium in Love's Park, IL.
