SAUGET, Il - On a night Zach Kirby allowed just one earned run, the Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, were blanked in a, 4-0, loss to the Gateway Grizzlies on Sunday at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
After Kirby (0-2) retired the first Gateway (12-15) batter he faced in the bottom of the third, Artemis Kadkhodaian skied a fly ball in to right field that Connor Crane was camped under but could not corral. When Kadkhodaian began to race towards second after the drop, Crane misfired in attempt to throw him out, sailing the ball high and into the Freedom (11-15) bullpen which allowed the runner to reach third base. After Cody Livesay walked to put runners on the corners, Matt Gonzales sent a chopper to short that was booted by Austin Wobrock as the Grizzlies jumped in front, 1-0. An ensuing walk would load the bases for Trae Santos who delivered a sacrifice fly to increase the Gateway lead to two. Terry McClure pushed the Grizzlies ahead, 3-0, with a single before a Justin Ellison fly out to left as the Freedom trailed by three on a trio of unearned runs entering the fourth frame.
The Freedom would have their fair share of opportunities to get on the board, but collected just two hits while stranding seven runners on base in the ballgame.
Santos tallied his second RBI of the night with his sixth long-ball of the season in the Gateway half of the fifth, pushing the Grizzlies in front by the eventual, 4-0, final score.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the sixth, southpaw Grizzlies starter, Max MacNabb (2-3) danced out of trouble by coaxing Jacob Wark into a groundout to second, preserving the Gateway four-run lead. MacNabb would not return for the seventh, finishing his night with six innings pitched, allowing no runs on just two Freedom hits with three walks and three strikeouts en route to a quality start victory.
Kirby would swallow the tough-luck loss, spanning six innings while allowing four runs, one earned on four hits with three free passes and one strikeout. Marty Anderson would throw the final two frames in relief, picking up a pair of strikeouts while walking one and conceding one base hit.
The Freedom will look for their first series win since May 24, on Monday in the fourth and final game of the series at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Florence will send out right-hander Steve Hagen with the Grizzlies countering with righty Mike Elwood. First pitch is slated for 7:05 CT.
The Florence Freedom are members of the Independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Wayin Florence, KY. The Freedom can be found online at florencefreedom.com, or by phone at (859) 594-4487.
