Marlins Sign Scott Sebald

Normal, Illinois - While Monday is an off day for teams in the league, it wasn't for Normal starting pitcher Scott Sebald as the Miami Marlins purchased his contract.

Sebald is the first Normal player this season to picked up by a major league club.

First-year manager Billy Horn knows that Sebald is very deserving of this. "Being this is my first year managing here, the quality of his character as a human being makes it seem as I've coached him for years. We are truly excited for Scott and this opportunity for him to continue his journey towards the major leagues. The Marlins are getting a great pitcher but more importantly, an even better person. We wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career."

The two-year Belter finished with an impressive career stat line. He pitched in 27 games with 20 starts for a total of 139 innings to produce a 2.98 ERA and a 12-4 record along with one save. Sebald also has only walked 33 batters compared to his 139 strikeouts.

This season Sebald has set the tone for the Normal pitching staff. He owns a 3-2 record, which leads the starting rotation in wins, including two wins in his last two starts.

The Cincinnati native kicked off the 2018 season on a strong note limiting Traverse City to two runs in six innings of work and no walks to help earn Horn his first win in Normal. In 33 innings this season he has only walked four batters to help compliment his 3.30 ERA and his 25 strikeouts rank second on the team.

Sebald says his time in Normal has been a true blessing. "It's been an honor to be apart of such a great organization. Getting to play for two amazing managers, Brooks (Carey) and Billy. They both really taught me a lot about the game and how to succeed. Very player-friendly guys that take care of you on and off the field. All the amazing teammates I've had the past two years that taught me what I know now, and to help push me to better my game. I wouldn't trade these past two seasons for anything in the world."

In his most recent start against the River City Rascals, the Belter ace went six innings not allowing any walks for the second time all season and struck out eight for a season-high. He was only five strikeouts away from his career-high (13) that he set on July 29th, 2017 against the Lake Eire Crushers who Normal opens up a home series with tomorrow.

The southpaw is no stranger to affiliated baseball as he signed with the Texas Rangers in 2016, where he was sent to their Rookie Ball Affiliate, the AZL Rangers. Sebald made three starts while appearing six other times for a total of 21 innings and 3.86 ERA. He also only walked seven and picked up a save.

After a month there, he was promoted to the Spokane Indians (Single-A) and made his debut just four days later. In five games, Sebald owned a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA in 10 innings with three walks.

Prior to minor league baseball, Sebald played spent four years at Lindsey Wilson College (NAIA) in Columbia, Kentucky. He holds the record there for career wins, ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched, and starts.

His college coach, Jonathan Burton, also had high praise for the lefty. "Scott has always been a high character and hard working young man. He will represent the Marlins organization with high class just as he did here at Lindsey Wilson. His work ethic is contagious and we are excited for this immediate opportunity. Scott made myself and our program very proud, he will do the same for the Marlins organization."
