The Freedom kicked off their 2006 season last Wednesday against the Evansville Otters at Champion Window Field. After sweeping the Otters, Florence welcomed the Chillicothe Paints to town. Chillicothe wasn't a very nice guest, sweeping the Freedom, sending the club on it's nine game roadtrip with a .500 record. 9,093 fans came out the Champion Window Field, an impressive number considering the dicy weather and a rainout/doubleheader.
Right now, the Freedom offense is being powered by a couple of hitters with hot bats. Chris Brown is hitting .395 with nine RBI, and 11 runs scored. Clint Chauncey has made all of his seven hits count, smacking three homeruns and a double, while driving in nine runs. Desiginated hitter Greg Buscher is leading the team in RBI with 10, while batting a hot average of .304. It was a week of homecomings for Wally Quigg, who originally planned not to return to play for the Freedom, came back anyway. He is hitting .316 through six games. Florence has struggled getting extra base hits, of their 104 hits, only 24 have gone for extra bases, good for only 25%.
Newcomer Mitch Goins has been the leader of the starting rotation for the Freedom, he has a 1-1 record, with a cool 3.24 ERA. Justin Roelle has been effective wherever Jamie Keefe and Chris Hook have asked him to go, Roelle has a 3.65 ERA. Roelle has started, pitched in long relief, and played a setup role in the team's first 12 games. Lefty Drew Jackson has been a consistant bullpen go-to-guy, with three saves and a 3.75 ERA. Jackson has overpowered most hitters thus far, striking out 13 in only 12 innings of work.
