Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

FREDERICK, MD - Bobby Bundy became the last of three Frederick starters to dominate the Pelicans on the weekend, pitching the Keys to a three-game sweep of Myrtle Beach with seven stellar innings in a 6-1 win in the Sunday evening finale at Harry Grove Stadium.

As it was in the first two nights of this series, one inning of offensive work was enough for Frederick in the series finale of three. With the bases loaded, two strikes, two outs, and the Pelicans leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Keys shortstop Manny Machado lifted a line drive out to center field that appeared to be destined to end the inning. Pelicans center fielder David Paisano misjudged the ball, however, and it glanced off his glove for a bases-clearing, three-run error. After Machado swiped second base, a Mike Flacco RBI single made it a 4-1 Frederick lead, and the Keys didn't look back. All four runs went charged as unearned against Pelicans starter Miguel De Los Santos.

Myrtle Beach did have a short-lived lead beginning in the second when the Pelicans got onto the board for the first time in this series. Jared Prince was hit by a pitch leading off the inning against Bundy, the outfielder's Carolina League-leading 20th HBP of the season, went to second on a passed ball, and scored two batters later on a Santiago Chirino RBI base hit to make it 1-0 Pelicans. The run snapped a string of 21 scoreless innings of ball for the Pelicans offense.

Bundy (10-5) allowed just two more baserunners the rest of the way. The right-handed All-Star struck out six, didn't walk a man, and saw the only run against him go as unearned while allowing just two hits on the night in the win.

Frederick added another run to its lead on Miguel Abreu's leadoff homer against De Los Santos (2-2) in the sixth to make it 5-1. The Pelicans' lefty lasted six innings and surrendered five runs, though just Abreu's home run went as earned, on six hits, striking out six against three walks. The Keys scratched out another unearned tally against reliever Ryan Kelly when Machado hit a two-out grounder to short that Leury Garcia couldn't handle. The ball bounced off Garcia's glove and into shallow center field, allowing Steve Bumbry to cruise around from second base with the Keys' final run. Of Frederick's six tallies in their 6-1 win, five runs were unearned against Pelicans pitchers.

Keys reliever Chris Petrini (S, 2) worked a perfect eighth and ninth to earn the save.

Myrtle Beach batted .114 (10-for-87) as a team in the series and had only one man reach scoring position in the final two games of the set combined. Frederick became just the second team to sweep the Pelicans in a series this year and the first since the Wilmington Blue Rocks took three from Myrtle Beach from May 27-19 at Frawley Stadium in Delaware.

The Pelicans open a seven-game homestand against the Lynchburg Hillcats and Winston-Salem Dash on Monday, July 25 at BB&T Coastal Field. Tickets for all Pelicans home games can be purchased by visiting the BB&T Coastal Field box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
