Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a game that took 15 innings, with 30 combined strikeouts, 14 walks, and 25 men left on base, the Pelicans came out on the wrong end of a marathon effort with the Frederick Keys, dropping the Saturday night affair by the score of 7-3.
Saturday night's contest began with the teams flying through the first six innings, completing those frames in just over an hour and 20 minutes, so it was fitting that the contest would become the longest game of the season for the Pelicans, with the final out being recorded four hours and 42 minutes after the first pitch, nearly stretching into Sunday morning.
Matt Crim made his first Carolina League start for the Pelicans and the lefty looked every bit the pitcher that won the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year in 2009. Crim allowed just a single unearned run in six innings of work, his longest outing of the season, while striking out four in the process, but he would not be around to see the end of this one.
The Pelicans struck first off Keys starter Ryan O'Shea in the bottom of the fourth as Shayne Moody laced a two-out, two-run double to left to give Crim a two-run cushion to work with. The Pelicans would add another in the bottom of the sixth as Gerardo Avila picked up yet another multi-hit contest, his fourth in a row, by blasting his team-leading fifth home run of the season off O'Shea to give the Birds a 3-1 lead.
The Keys would come back and tie the game in the eighth inning as Kyle Hudson led off the inning with a single off Benino Pruneda, stole second and third, and scampered home with the tying run as first base runner Xavier Avery got into a rundown, allowing Hudson to score.
And that's where the two teams would stay for seven more innings before the Keys busted through against reliever Van Pope (0-2) who suffered his second loss in as many appearances, both of them being extra-inning affairs. Avery led off the 15th with a triple and two walks, one intentional and one unintentional, loading the bases for Bobby Stevens. With a full count, Stevens laced a Pope offering to right center field to score a pair and give the Keys their first lead of the ballgame. Two more runs came around on a Jacob Julius single and a balk by Pope to push the lead to 7-3.
Brandon Cooney set down the Pelicans in order in the bottom of the 15th.
These two teams will enjoy a quick turnaround as the rubber match of this three-game series has its first pitch scheduled for 3:05 ET. The final game of the homestand will be very special indeed as the Pelicans will not only let fans play catch on the field before the first pitch, but the team will also be celebrating the birthday of their beloved mascot, Splash! On top of this jam-packed Family Sunday at BB&T Coastal Field, there will be a jersey auction after the game as the Pelicans players will be decked out in special Racing Jerseys presented by Window World.
